This group who was crucial in ending the sectarian violence and putting Al-Qaeda on the run in their provinces during the US surge of 2007 appear to
feel they have been slighted by the US and the Iraqi government. Many of them fought alongside their Iraqi and US counterparts learning tactics and
manuevers in the past. Now, it seems they are moonlighting as insurgents by night and loyalists to the government by day. Furthermore, it seems the
rift has risen over nonpayment by the Iraqi government, paltry payment, lack of employment opportunities in the Iraqi security forces, and concern
about their fates when the new Iraqi government convenes.
This development can only make the teetering security situation worse and could pose added threats to the remaining 50,000 US military in country
serving as advisors to the Iraqi security services. There is nothing worse than a bunch of disgruntled employees with guns and a vendetta over unpaid
wages, lack of support, and ungrateful government. Let the escalation continue. As I have been saying for the longest, Iraq is in far worse shape than
what the world and the American people are being led to believe by the MSM and US government.
