Enough Tea Party-supported candidates are running strongly in competitive and Republican-leaning Congressional races that the movement stands a good chance of establishing a sizable caucus to push its agenda in the House and the Senate, according to a New York Times analysis.

While the numbers are relatively small, they could exert outsize influence, putting pressure on Republican leaders to carry out promises to significantly cut spending and taxes, to repeal health care legislation and financial regulations passed this year, and to phase out Social Security and Medicare in favor of personal savings accounts.

As someone that has paid in a lifetime of Social Security and Medicare, I don't want those programs to be phased out.

However I do believe the TPM will see some substantial victories, but I also don't see that they can wield enough power to change the status quo of the way Washington operates. When the stakes are as high monitarally as they are in the Federal Govt.; even the TPM canidates will toe the line with the sex, graft, corruption, threats, lies, payoffs, promises of sweet jobs after govt. service. etc.

Those who seek power are so easily corrupted; it's naive to even think change will happen to benefit the proletariat. Cynical....you might say that.

Welcome to the monkey house!

Sadly America has already been sold.

The American political system is run by big business.

In general it would be a mistake, I believe, to phase out these programs, particularly when things get bad economically nationwide. Many people don't make enough money to save for retirement, and many have jobs without retirement or pension plans. Of course there are those who make enough money to save, but simply don't.

What happens when these populations age out? It will be disastrous. Prime real estate will be under the bridge?
Communities and states will have to rely on federal funding for section VIII housing, food stamps, free clinics and the rest anyway.

Removing SS benefits will ultimately cost the country more money, not less.

But there are people who don't need it or use it. I have known people like this, and asked them why they let the SS continue, and they typically say they paid into it all those years, and they want it anyway.

I would like to see some sort of balances....that SS is simply not automatically sent to the very rich upon application. We could be a little more wise about it.

Sadly , Intitlement Programs such as SS have Already been Gutted by the last two Administrations . As a Baby Boomer in his 50's , I doubt very much I will see the Money I paid into that Program over the last 4 Decades when I finally Retire . It dosen't matter to me though , I have gotten by in Life so far without Ever excepting a Single DIME from the Goverment , and will Survive somehow without it . For others though , it could become Devistating to them in their Twilight Years unless their Family and Friends somehow Help them out . I Guess FDR never Imagined that his Godchild would Ever be Abandoned like this only 75 Years later.....

I'm with you Whaa. My father is on BOTH Social Security and Medicare.

THE REST OF YOU CAN F OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heartless pricks. There is a spot reserved in hell for you....but you don't care...as long as you recycle the opinions of those who don't give a damn about you...so be it...right?????????????

So I guess it must take a "heartless prick" to prop up a ponzi system knowing that they won't receive any benefit from it in the future?

Yep there is a special spot in hell reserved for the people who are inheriting debt.

I understand that it would be a horrible thing to cancel both SS and Medicare, however i think that if this was to happen i don't believe they would just cut it off one day and be like "Ok thanks for the donations all this time now good luck on your journey." Im sure they would take a certain age bracket that is currently on or about to be on SS and/or medicare and compensate for them and cut it off at a certain age where they would not be eligible for those kind of benefits.

But then again i could be way off what do i know ;D

Yea ain't that idea just a kick in the nuts?

"Hi America, thanks for putting money into social security all these years, now, we are going to take all that money from you and hand it over to wall street. Because wall street knows how to handle money.Disabled? Well, that's not Wall Street's problem now is it?"

Course some idiots out there still are of the misguided opinion that the TPM is Independent. Yea, how many "independent" candidates do they have? These people are just Republicans with a fresh coat of brainwash.

I've heard it alluded to in different ways, but I do believe this is my favorite.

@curiousisall:

I do not understand how anyone can continue to say they are not Republicans with a straight face.

Amazing, isn't it? lol.
