As someone that has paid in a lifetime of Social Security and Medicare, I don't want those programs to be phased out.
In general it would be a mistake, I believe, to phase out these programs, particularly when things get bad economically nationwide. Many people
don't make enough money to save for retirement, and many have jobs without retirement or pension plans. Of course there are those who make enough
money to save, but simply don't.
What happens when these populations age out? It will be disastrous. Prime real estate will be under the bridge?
Communities and states will have to rely on federal funding for section VIII housing, food stamps, free clinics and the rest anyway.
Removing SS benefits will ultimately cost the country more money, not less.
But there are people who don't need it or use it. I have known people like this, and asked them why they let the SS continue, and they typically say
they paid into it all those years, and they want it anyway.
I would like to see some sort of balances....that SS is simply not automatically sent to the very rich upon application. We could be a little more
wise about it.
