If we did that it wouldn't be joke/mental excersize.
This math problem is more of a joke/troll post than anything else.
It encourages discussion about solving the question. Taht's pretty amusing to watch.

It is amusing to watch...I don't believe it is still going on and still arguing over what the correct answer is.

I'm not a good teacher...I explain things the way they make sense to me...if someone can't get it from that...I'm lost. So I will just sit back and watch

1 - (3 x 4) + 7 =

1 - 12 + 7 =

-11 + (+7) = -4

The addition / subtraction gets done in the order written after the multiplication / division gets done.

I just went back and read the last 2 pages.
that's really frightening. I think a few people need to go back to school.

Right answer is simply '0' i can prove you;

the section '-3*4' is complicated. so i want to consider Y=-3*4 and my equation is now:

1+Y+7 = X (i am considering my result as X)
8+Y = X (now i want to consider Y=3*Z)
8+3Z = X
now multiply equation with X:
8X+3ZX = X" (i want to write 'X^2' as X")
subtract Z" (i mean Z^2) from booth sides of equation:
8X+3XZ-Z" = X"-Z"
X(8+3Z)-Z*Z = X"-Z"

i know Y=3*Z and Y=-3*4; so i can calculate Z=-4. i want to put that Z value to two italic one above:

X(8+3(-4))-(-4)*Z = X"-Z"

we all know (X^2 - Y^2) = (X-Y)*(X+Y) now i want to use that at the right side of my current equation above:

X(8-12)+4Z = (X-Z)*(X+Z)
-4*(X-Z) = (X-Z)*(X+Z)
-4 = (X+Z) (and i already know Z=-4)
-4 = X+(-4)
X=0

mission accomplished

LoL yeah.

I wonder why this is so difficult?

One. Minus three times four, plus seven.

How hard can that be to solve?

If you read the sentence out loud you even get a tip on how to solve it.

Nope...everytime I type it into google, excel, windows calculator, SQL....I get -4.

I am pretty sure I'm being Punked...punked by people pretending they have poor math skills...at least I hope that is the case.

I tried with wolframAlpha: www64.wolframalpha.com...

Even it shows -4 as the true answer.

I would hope so. Math has clear rules that we are taught at an early age. Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. BEDMAS . And to go from left to right in order after BEDMAS.

Some people have gone to great lengths to try to show another answer, but it is -4.
I wonder what the math skills are like in the government? I hope it's better, or there's no hope. That small equation showed how many different ways that math can be mangled.

lol all of the answers are right, depending on what the question tells you to do to solve the problem.

I dont agree with you on that.

In this case the equation is set. When you have put in the equality symbol the question is clear.

What does 1 - 3 x 4 + 7 =

1 - 3 x 4 + 7 = -4
