After a brief chat about the weather, Britons like nothing better than to natter about what they are viewing on the box.

So perhaps it is no surprise to learn that, while watching and discussing programmes dominates our spare time, TV sets are monopolising our homes.

For one in six families own five televisions, research shows. And two thirds of households have three TV sets or more as we watch more shows than ever.

The popularity of features such as flat screens, high definition and 3D has seen sales soar in recent years.

Digital switchover, which will be complete in 2012 and will render analogue televisions redundant unless they have a set top box, is another factor fuelling the boom in sales.

In many homes, it is now the norm to have TVs in every bedroom and the kitchen, as well as the living room.

Families still sit down together to watched popular shows but often have sets in other rooms to keep keep their options open
