CBS News

To hear President Obama tell it, Slurpees are the beverage of choice of obstructionist Republicans.

In each of 20 political speeches over the last two months, Mr. Obama has included a riff in which he portrays GOP leaders as sipping Slurpees while hard-working Democrats struggle to pull the economy out of a ditch.

"We're down there. It's hot. We were sweating. Bugs everywhere. We're down there pushing, pushing, pushing on the car. Every once in a while we'd look up and see the Republicans standing there. They're just standing there fanning themselves -- sipping on a Slurpee."

Read more at the link.

1 - What if a Republican had said that Obama was too busy drinking koolaid and eating watermelon to get the job done? If 'drinking koolaid and eating watermelon' have race/class implications, then so does his continual use of 'drinking a slurpee and fanning themselves'. Lazy white folks .... drinking cool drinks ... Obama is sweating and working away. Subtle (or not) ... definately there. Subliminal. (or obvious).

2 - If the dems were really working that hard, they could have gotten their job done. They are a majority. He's just whining.

3 - Perhaps the job they are doing isn't worth all their 'effort'. To use Obama's OVERUSED picture ... they are pushing a DEAD car and need a new one. Why bother pushing a dead, useless, gas guzzling car? It doesn't work and it's a burden. Get a new one that actually works and is SUSTAINABLE.

4 - Is this rhetoric hope and change enough for ya'll yet?

S&F for you...yup the double standard in the media never fails to amaze me, and as you said if someone said that about Obama yup we'd have every idiot in the world commenting in it. Of course racism only applies if your not white according to some on here so no doubt they'll be here shortly spewing nonsense again. as a side note, I do like Slurpees, but only the origional coke ones.

Well this would be the FIRST time I would have ever heard Slurpies being used in a race/class way. I think I have been called every derogatory race themed name in the book, hell, I have even been called a Jim Carrey lookin mother (beep). But never EVER have I been called a Slurpie drinker. Besides aren't there black Republicans?

Except that even though the democrats are in power, they don't always vote together. Honestly, the fact that the right wants everyone of a certain party to vote party lines shows a deep flaw in the right wing mindset. Representatives are supposed to vote their constituents wishes, not vote along party lines.

Except that car is our economy, what are we supposed to do? What do you want? Do you want us to give up the dollar for perhaps the Amero?

4 - Is this rhetoric hope and change enough for ya'll yet?

Well, what is the GOP plan? Oh that's right, the GOP has no plan, and they don't want to actually fix anything just dismantle everything the Democrats have done.

Obama's just bitter that everyone on the other side didn't jump aboard his agenda from day one. Sometimes when I hear quotes like this,I feel like the guy felt entitled to to no political opposition. I don't see how you can be 'transformative,' 'building the new left of center america,' and all the other stuff they said about Obama on election-day night 2008 and be so appalled that not everyone is jumping on board. It's like he wants to be FDR except without any resistance from a second party.

You can't expect the opposition party to do anything but oppose if you're not going to offer an olive branch (or at least something other than constant blaming and insults). No president in the last 20 years has been a true 'uniter' but this one seemed to have believed his own bs. It's kind of frightening.

This isn't a double standard. Slurpees have no racial connotations at all whatsoever. To say otherwise is just downright idiotic.

1 - It isn't 'idiotic'. BTW .. read your T&C rules.
2 - It DOES have other connotations .. just as koolaid, fried chicken and watermellon do.
Ya' wanna' tell Obama that he's too busy eating fried chicken and drinking koolaid to get things done?
Didn't think so.
Neither should he be using (at LEAST 20 times in the past 20 big speeches) that republicans are sitting back, drinking slurpees, and fanning themselves while he does all the work. (ala stereotype - southern plantation lazy white folk). His insinuation isn't lost on a lot of people. But he can get away with it because the PC machine won't go after him on it. It would be racist of someone to point out Obama's racist/class remarks.

So because YOU haven't heard it, that means it isn't so? Um ... no.

Besides aren't there black Republicans?

You betchya. But that's not the stereotype, is it?
If the dems were really working that hard, they could have gotten their job done. They are a majority. He's just whining and pushing off the blame onto the republicans.

Except that even though the democrats are in power, they don't always vote together.

Exactly. That means the dems are the ones not working .. not pushing their car ... (according to the visualization Obama used). He blamed Republicans for standing around and not pushing the car. But if the dems really wanted Obama's useless gas guzzling piece of crap pushed up the hill, THEY would have been able to do it. Instead, Obama blames the republicans. Unbelievable!

Except that car is our economy,

Pushing a dead piece of crap that is unsustainable is wrong. Gotta' have a new model that can actually run. Pushing something unsustainable is just plain wrong. And Obama, being derogatory towards people who don't want to push his useless (worse than useless) piece of machinery up the hill ... that's

Well, what is the GOP plan?

Well, does it matter? The point is that Obama's 'plan' sucks. His spending sucks. His programs are unsustainable. You don't embrace those things that you know are wrong and bad just because there isn't another game in town. That's absurd.

The original TEA Party plan ... Quit spending what we don't have. Don't have programs we can't afford.
It's just that simple.

It does make sense that republicans wouldn't want to help in a meaningful way, since if things got fixed, people would have no need to elect republicans into office.

I don't think "Slurpee" has any racial component to it either.

this whole 'republicans are obstructionists' thing doesn't make any sense to me. first, i agree with what you said to a degree. the other party is going to try to obstruct your policies, that's just the way it is, they politically benefit from your political failures. but that doesn't mean they want to see the economy collapse anymore than the democrats wanted to see massive death tolls in iraq.

second, and most importantly, i'm at a loss to see how exactly this supposed 'obstruction' is supposed to be the culprit for our sh***y economy. obama got his stimulus, he's gotten some control over tarp even, and he got his massive healthcare bill. all of these things were supposed to fix stuff remember? with or without republican support they haven't fixed anything.

its like he's trying to argue that if only we all 'believed' then things would start working. no. you got your money Mr. president, you spent it the way you wanted to spend it and it hasn't worked. blaming the people who didn't want to give you that power in the first place means nothing. you got it, you spent it, it didn't work.

end of question. obama's policies were implemented and didn't work.

Being in hell sucks like that... It's too bad that you ran out of tainted Kool-aid. I'm sure the republicans will sell you slurpees for a fair, free market price, and if you can't pay, that is too bad, get a real job!

When you are done, the republicans will contract Haliburton to remove the car you've been pushing on, have it repaired and drive it back into town where millions of Slurpee drinking Americans are waiting to celebrate the return of the conservative agendas. The same Americans who got ran over by that car when it was being driven into that ditch.

Yep, we are ready to take a spin around the block, and do it all over again.

This is brilliant and the smartest thing he ever said.

First of all it's self defining so let's get rid of any confusion.

Fanning themselves
sipping on slurpees

these are both cooling measures
the fans are to cool themselves off
and what we know about slurpees is that they are refrigerated

the implication is that they could have at least brought drinks for everybody

this statement is both squeaky clean, and self defining, and it does more to add to the integrity of the office than anything I have seen in a long long time.

Look at all this partisan bickering.

"Forget the issues, lets just fight over demographics".

Obama is saying the republicans arent doing anything to help his administration out, nor have they, because they have been in the pits of hell "TRYING"(myword) to fix the mess we are in.
Well, OK, Obama. Guess what?

YOU HAVE NOBODY TO BLAME WHEN YOU COME UP SHORT. YOUR PARTY IS IN CHARGE< YOUR PARTY HAS BEEN IN CONTROL. YOU HAVE NOBODY TO BLAME...but yourself.

This guy cries and whines like no other President I have seen/heard of before. Someone give him a slurpee.

Begins at 2:49.

Make no mistake this is an intentional effort to invoke the imagery of the privileged white upper-class in contrast to the hard working oppressed normal folk.

All notable socialist 'greats' did this. The privileged versus the working class. The proletariat.

Obama is as objectionable as the former Decider-in-Chief. The end of his term can not come soon enough.

In my neighborhood that was a derog used upon an Indian, never heard it used to defame a white person.
Fortunately we have just expanded the racist lexicon

That's a good point Janky Red,
if there is any racist meaning, it's only
the implication that the republicans are outsourcing industry.
Didn't we used to have crews who could get cars out of ditches?
Why is the president in there.

I like slurpees...especially the blue raspberry ones (electric blue...does incredible things to the color of your tongue...).

Oh, right...the topic.

Mr. Obama, and his allies, have this class warfare stuff down cold. Say anything that will portray his opponents as enemies of the "working man", trying to get people to see him as their protector and benevolent guardian... All the while being something all together different... His allies try this, too. The venomous attacks on anyone who even ventures a criticism of President Obama is a legitimate, in their eyes, target.

I'm one of those working men...been one most of my, well, working life. I don't want his protection, nor do I want the protection of those who profess to oppose him. I want them to butt the hell out of my life, my bedroom, my television viewing habits, or what I decide to read in the library.

All I ask for from this ramshackle excuse of a governing body is a smooth highway, high speed limits, and cheap gas. I'll actually settle for the smooth highway, I'm easy that way. What I won't settle for is a govt., and its sycophants, that try to portray opposition as either bigots, uneducated boors, or calls them whores or worse, as has been done. Any support I may have had for Mr. Obama disappeared when his supporters began that sort of campaigning/tactics... One is known by his associates.

...and before you go all "The Republicans are doing the same thing" at me. I don't support them, either. I am that rare bird, by all appearances, that will vote the man/woman and their supporters. That can make for some very tough voting come November.

Mmmmm...slurpees.

I have never heard of drinking slurpees being a stereo type for ANY race. Where did you get that from? With all due respect you are the one coming across as racist here. Why are you assuming that he is talking about only the white replublicans???

Are you under the impression that all republicans are white?

How do you equate Obama accusing republicans of being lazy, to anything race related? NO ONE is playing the racecard here.... Well, you are... but the president is not.

You are looking way to far into to a statement of laziness.

Most manufacturing sector jobs were long gone before Obama got into office. They left even though Reagan basically gave them carte blanche to run with few regulations and to make up the rules as they went along.

They left even though Bush Sr., Clinton, and Bush Jr. all worked to appease them.

We've dissolved our borders with NAFTA to appease business. We've allowed business the upper hand in every single dealing. Yet, because the third world is a source of cheaper labor - business still hemorrhages jobs out of this country.

As far as western nations go, there are about fifteen ahead of us in the area of workers rights. Most have subsidized or nationalized health care and yet they still manage to have a higher minimum wage than us. Business won't be happy until we are Mexico V2 and all beg for the right to work the fields for third world wages.

Now on topic...

Obama has been accused of being a crook, an illegal alien, a socialist... and countless other things by republicans. And the best they've got to come back with is "Well he called us slurpee sippers!"??????

If you look hard enough for offense, you apparently will find it.
