A petrol tanker has crashed into buses in south-eastern Iran, killing more than 70 people and injuring 84, state television reports.

The tanker hit buses which had stopped at a police station outside the city of Zahedan on the main road from Bam, a local official said.

The interesting thing about this incident, besides the obvious, is that the accident occured Thursday and Iranian state TV did not mention the accident until Friday.

Update from Skynews

The tanker collided with buses full of passengers that had stopped at the police station. Trucks and buses often wait outside police stations on roads in the region to be inspected for drugs and other contraband.

Other reports have suggested that the death toll could be as high as 200.

Well now we know what the buses were doing parked outside a police station. However, the issue of the significant delay in reporting still remains.
