I do not miss the fairness doctrine, at all. Is there bias in the media? Most definitely. But there always has been bias. Take a look at the Yellow Journalism and the push for the Cuban War. (Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill for the non-history majors). The expose articles on Boss Tweed. All bias, and frankly not much different than today's well written blog site.
Freedom of the Press is an individual freedom, as is every Right in the Bill of Rights. The right to commit to paper your opinions. It is a muddied mantra of the editors and publishers of newspapers and television that assert as corporate/industry right.
The harsh reality, fairness doctrine or not, what is published is the approved opinions of the owners and editors. And that is the way that it is. Without the fairness doctrine, at least the media is somewhat honest about their opinions without the "gotcha" presentations of the opposition as balance.
