103P/Hartley 2 Discovered 1986-Mar-15 by Hartley, Malcolm at U. K. Schmidt Telescope Unit,
Siding Spring. November 6th 2010 ought to give us a very good look at it as it crosses Earths
path soon after that.

Wish I had a telescope, I'd love to take a closer look myself.

Good catch & good link. S&F.

The JPL link you provided (I love that site!) says that closest approach & max brightness will be around October 21/22. It barely cracks 10th magnatude, but it'll be a good telescope target. Thanx!

I'll be observing this comet on the Keck II Telescope in Hawaii later this month as part of my research. It's a pretty amazing opportunity.

Found Nostradamus' Quatrain today concerning a bearded star, I hope it has nothing to do with this Comet?

Century 2, Number 43.

"At the time that the bearded star is seen,
Three great leaders will become enemies,
Earthquakes and disaster falling from the heavens,
The Po and Tiber Rivers flooding,
A serpent is seen on the shore."

Just read about the Hartley 2 comet. Very exciting. Wish I had a telescope. Or even just a dark sky would do. (damned street lights) NASA's Deep Impact probe is on it's way to inspect it. I just hope it doesn't bump into it and send it spiralling towards earth. One mile wide is HUGE.

And the name of the star that burns like a torch was called Bitterness.
That's as close as I could get.
Hartley Brewery, in Ulverston, Cumbria from c.1754 until about 1989.

I don't think this one will burn as bright as a torch but bitterness could be a good description.
Apparently it might be made of some nasty stuff.

The comet’s greenish hue is due to gases in its atmosphere, which may include cyanogen, a poisonous gas found in many comets, and diatomic carbon. Both gases glow green when illuminated by sunlight in the near-vacuum of space.

methinks anything inanimate entering Earths atmosphere will be bright as a "Star" don't you?

I don't think so either, 11 million miles is still far to us (even if it is only a drop in the bucket
considering the vast expanse of the Universe).
