They had some of the best retirement policies in Europe. Something had to give.
That said some of the proposed cuts are both severe and immediate. So I reckon I would be protesting, if it was me.

I figured something was going on behind the smoke. Thanks for the heads up.

You mentioned reading about Marx?

Socialism and Communism would be a fix for all this. They would just put a bullet in everyones head and the news would have been about an extra ration of toilet paper.

Marx is not the cure. Honest trade practices are. "predatory" capitalism is like going back to serfs and lords.

As some posted before me, here in Europe it's not unusual to have this kind of demonstrations, happens all the time. Only this time all these countries desided to do it on the same day, which makes it 'seem' bigger then it is. Unfortunately, the riots and violence are usually part of it but normally they don't make the news.

Those demonstrations from last week seem big, but the truth is that half the population didn't even knew they where planned. You have to be actively involved with a union to even know about the 'where and when' or take part in it... it still are a select few that are taking it to the streets.

As for the terror allert, well what they tell us over here (Belgium), is that Whashington and Brussels have been communicating about this terror threat 'for weeks'. The main story is that they know about a group of terrorist staying in Europe, who have EU papers and can travel through Europe freely. The statement that they will probably strike in Germany or France is pure speculation because this kind of information has not been released to the media by officials.

Tomorrow there is a big Euro/Azian Top in Brussels where a lot of important people and leaders will gather, they haven't raised the threat level or taken bigger security precautions then usual. That's how serious it's been taken here (not).
But, I hear that other EU countries do take this serious.

For me personaly, it's nothing new and nothing I worry about.

Maybe Europe was a bit spoiled when it comes to retirement? It 'used to' be very good... used to..

France is demonstrating because the legal pension age will go up fom 60 to 62 (+ extra taxes) . In most EU countries the legal pension age is already 65, with plans to move that up to 67 by 2018.

I believe in the VS it's 66? (correct me if I'm wrong)

By the time I retire I probably have to work till age 72 for a pension of less then 800 euros.....

I hope so it now starts!
But aslong the protests and riots not reach every city and small town in every country, i dont think anything (good for the people) will happen...
Where is the forks guy when we need him! Really, somebody should do something like in the movie "V for vendetta" or like the "laughing man hacks facebook"

Here is a nice song from a befriended musican: (it is german and english translated text!)

... the truth is, that bankers and other corporations influence the Western government so much, then it all makes sense, the government is protecting the bankers, and punishing the people. Infact the government is using people's money to pay for the bankers, and traders.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That Sir ...is the whole ball of wax
what has been happening in Europe in the last week.
I didn’t hear any one mention of the eleven MILLION workers who shut down Spain for a day in a protest against cutbacks in the name of austerity,
or the three million who angrily marched in France to defend their pensions.
American workers do not have the consciousness or political culture of their European counterparts.
And now in Iceland, “up to 2,000 people caused chaos at the state opening of the Icelandic parliament, with politicians forced to race to the back door of the building because of the large number of protesters at the front. Eggs were said to have hit the prime minister, Jhanna Sigurardttir, other MPs and the wife of the Icelandic president, lafur Ragnar Grmsson... Birgitta Jnsdttir, one of three MPs to join the protesters, said:
"There is a realisation that the IMF is going to wipe out our middle classes."'
Americans don't figure that the IMF can have any degree of control of the Executive or Legislative branches of gov't
that's the time limit for 'EDIT' ing of a post you made earlier)...but thats another item for review
Its true that its a syndicate thing and you would be better informed if you were a member. You said in Belguim half the country didnt know. Here in Spain the WHOLE country knew. We like to protest if things are not going how they should. Recently the PEOPLE have managed to outlaw BULL FIGHTING in Catalunya so its not legal in this part of Spain which is barbaric. I saw on TV the other a debate about whether the Spanish Government should place CCTV in public places. The Spanish politician said "i would change my rights for security any day", when i heard this i was disgusted. I would like to see if any protests are going to happen concerning the CCTV.
Yes I agree with you. Living in Germany it's nothing new to see protesters regarding both political and social issues. I find this thread is way over the top in the description and phrasing of the protests. Europe is not experiencing an 'uprising'. It's pure sensationalism.
Sure the Governments are clamping down quite strongly but that's why we protest. Yet it's business as normal here and a few protests on the same day is nothing special.
The rumour that there's going to be a terrorist attack here in Germany is also pure speculation. It's all very hush hush with zero official statements. It's like someone implanted the idea in someone and it's currently doing the rounds. That doesn't mean it wont happen but I'm just saying it's not something to get your knickers in a twist about.
I wouldn't put too much hope in this 'uprising'. We're still a long way off from that happening.
The warning about this and what else is coming was given over 70 years ago.
Countless people ... will hate the new world order, be rendered unhappy by the frustration of their passions and ambitions through its advent and will die protesting against it. When we attempt to evaluate its promise, we have to bear in mind the distress of a generation or so of malcontents, many of them quite gallant and graceful-looking people.
~ HG Wells ~ 1940 ~ The New World order
For those around the world who do not want to die I suggest a more passive version of
what some of the partisans did in WW2.
If they had just kept to themselves they would have had zero casualties, and
they could have steered clear of the soviets and not been betrayed by them as well.
Wow...so you post all of the above and then you write about Marx, the father of the worse socio-economical system which has caused the most death around the world, and the MOST oppression?...
Marx also argued that in order for socialism and finally communism to be accepted people would have to resort to violence... It is called "the worker's revolution" for a reason, and btw we are in the mess we are in for accepting SOCIALIST doctrines... Not because of "capitalism"...
Oh and btw, I just posted this information which I made in a thread months ago and show the real reason for the "economic crisis" and the claims of "AGW" etc...
In 1991 an evil green environlunatic, i mean a good environmentalist known as professor Ignacy Sachs wrote a paper for the UN in which he describes step by step the phases that need to be taken by the SOCIALIST elites in order for western countries to redistribute their wealth to developing countries, as well as the emergence of a One World Government.
He states in this paper that the governments of the western world will most probably not accept this transfer of wealth, and dissolution of their sovereignty unless their hands are forced "by a popular movement or a catastrophe, such as another Great Depression or ecological disaster.
How about if you cause all of them?... Cause a worldwide economic crisis, claim that there is an environmental problem that MUST BE SOLVED RIGHT NOW, and that if you don't do it THE WORLD WILL DIE, and make a "popular movements of the people backing immediate action to stop such an environmental problem, and economic prolem....Wouldn't that be better?.....
He discusses how it will be needed for the dissolution of all middle classes around the world, which will mean EVERYONE will be equally poor which happens in Socialist dictatorships.
He states this plan, and strategies should cover several decades in order to be implemented slowly, unless there can be redistribution of wealth at a faster pace, which would shorten the time needed to implement this plan.
BTW, I am going to be linking to the official UNESCO website where the paper can be found.
Without further due, here is the article and links supporting what I just described above.
By Jurriaan Maessen
“The governments of Europe, the United States, and Japan are unlikely to negotiate a social-democratic pattern of globalization – unless their hands are forced by a popular movement or a catastrophe, such as another Great Depression or ecological disaster“
Richard Sandbrook, Closing the Circle: Democratization and Development in Africa, Zed Books limited, London, 2000.
A 1991 policy paper prepared for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) by self-described ‘ecosocioeconomist’ professor Ignacy Sachs outlines a strategy for the transfer of wealth in name of the environment to be implemented in the course of 35 to 40 years. As it turns out, it is a visionary paper describing phase by phase the road to world dictatorship. As the professor states in the paper:
“To be meaningful, the strategies should cover the time-span of several decades. Thirty-five to forty years seems a good compromise between the need to give enough time to the postulated transformations and the uncertainties brought about by the lengthening of the time-span.“
In his paper “The Next 40 Years: Transition Strategies to the Virtuous Green Path: North/South/East/Global“, Sachs accurately describes not only the intended time-span to bring about a global society, but also what steps should be taken to ensure “population stabilization”:
“In order to stabilize the populations of the South by means other than wars or epidemics, mere campaigning for birth control and distributing of contraceptives has proved fairly inefficient.“
In the first part of the (in retrospect) bizarrely accurate description of the years to come, Sachs points out redistribution of wealth is the only viable path towards population stabilization and- as he calls it- a “virtuous green world”. The professor:
“The way out from the double bind of poverty and environmental disruption calls for a fairly long period of more economic growth to sustain the transition strategies towards the virtuous green path of what has been called in Stockholm ecodevelopement and has since changed its name in Anglo-Saxon countries to sustainable development.”
“(…) a fair degree of agreement seems to exist, therefore, about the ideal development path to be followed so long as we do not manage to stabilize the world population and, at the same time, sharply reduce the inequalities prevailing today.”
“The bolder the steps taken in the near future”, Sachs asserts, “the shorter will be the time span that separates us from a steady state. Radical solutions must address to the roots of the problem and not to its symptoms. Theoretically, the transition could be made shorter by measures of redistribution of assets and income.”
Sachs points to the political difficulties of such proposals being implemented (because free humanity tends to distrust any national government let alone transnational government to redistribute its well-earned wealth). He therefore proposes these measures to be implemented gradually, following a meticulously planned strategy:
“The pragmatic prospect is one of transition extending itself over several decades.”
In the second sub-chapter “The Five Dimensions of Ecodevelopment”, professor Sachs sums up the main dimensions of this carefully outlined move to make Agenda 21 a very real future prospect. The first dimension he touches upon is “Social Sustainability“:
“The aim is to build a civilization of being within greater equity in asset and income distribution, so as to improve substantially the entitlements of the broad masses of population and of reduce the gap in standards of living between the have and the have nots.”
This of course means, reducing the standards of living in “The North” (U.S., Europe) and upgrading those of the developing nations (”The South and The East”). This would have to be realized through what Sachs calls “Economic Sustainability“: “made possible by a more efficient allocation and management of resources and a steady flow of public and private investment.”
The third dimension described by the professor is “Ecological Sustainability” which, among other things, limits “the consumption of fossile fuels and other easily depletable or environmentally harmful products, substituting them by renewable and/or plentiful and environmentally friendly resources, reducing the volume of pollutants by means of energy and resource conservation and recycling and, last but not least, promoting self-constraint in material consumption on part of the rich countries and of the privileged social strata all over the world;”
In order to make this happen Sachs stresses the need of “defining the rules for adequate environmental protection, designing the institutional machinery and choosing the mix of economic, legal and administrative instruments necessary for the implementation of environmental policies.”
So how long till Americans get tired of the Red, White, and Blue dick being jammed up our behinds? I wonder what it would take for us to start this?
Im Spanish. What is referred as RIOTS is normal mass violence here in Europe. It has always been like this.
When we win the cup we get on the streets to party and some people go breaking and burning things too. (Ask the English, they've have been doing that across Europe for football reasons for decades). The French, as someone pointed above, go on strike or protest against every little cut on conquered rights... And lately thats once per semester.
This time was a quite remarkable one, but one more episode in Europe's violence history.
False.
There is no mass uprisings in Europe.
Why?
I live in Europe and there are no uprisings in my country.
And in most other countries.
Though I'd like Europe to have a massive uprising.
Ain't happening in nearest future.
Maybe if another Financial crisis starts if not then I doubt something else could trigger that.
Quite right - a lot of our American or Middle eastern friends tend to forget that we're a rowdy bunch at times, although i daresay the football comments might have been true at some point, but our fans are somewhat better behaved these days and are often on the receiving ends of attacks from foreign fans, probably a result of the media hysteria which you have also absorbed. Not all english football fans are skinheaded hooligans y'know.
Anyhoo, the English know how to protests just as much as anyone, yet the French tend to lean towards more of a riot tactic especially in the suburbs (as of late). The greeks too aswell as many other european cultures. Although riots and protests are divided on cultural opinion as opposed to a general 'European' belief as a whole, which doesn't exist.
Take heed friends, because each country in Europe is like an individual chilling in the same tent, each country has character and differences of attitude and different friends and enemies and attitudes to war, religion, politics, art, culture, belief and global interests...
I think my point is: Don't try and group us into a whole, yet don't try to divide us ...
The english (believe it or not) are at the moment quite passive, considering how much stigma we get from certain groups - we're quite the chilled bunch (until you piss us off).
This will never happen in America, why? Because all the government has to do is throw a couple pennies in the air, promise some magical resolutions and give hope and everybody will scram to get the bread crumbs, while feeding on hope, that is wow our nations politicians keep the people from mutiny.
