Beginning today (October 1, 2010), the University of Utah Seismograph Stations has reduced the magnitude threshold for public web posting of automated earthquake locations and magnitudes for the Yellowstone region. The new minimum magnitude threshold is M 1.5, reduced from the previous threshold of M 2.5. The new threshold value will allow more earthquake information to be rapidly released to the public and other users. This lower magnitude threshold will be tested during a trial period and may be increased again.

Small earthquakes are common in the Yellowstone region. With the reduced magnitude threshold for web posting of automated earthquake locations and magnitudes, it will no longer be practical for seismologists to continue the practice of reviewing all of this information immediately after posting. Users of these data should be aware that an unreviewed earthquake report can be significantly in error and might even be a false alarm, regardless of the reported magnitude. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations will continue its policy of including only reviewed events in its finalized earthquake catalog.

Wow, I am stunned. They are really going to let the public hang themselves on this one. They are going to auto report 1.5 and above now, meaning the potential for false alarms on swarms is really going to skyrocket.

So all of you Yellowstone watchers double beware. Low mag quakes auto reported now may be error, until they are reviewed. Why do I already think I am might get caught in this trap myself?

Well, hopefully not. But still, heads up to the wise. Double confirm quakes by using multiple stations to confirm they are quakes and not man made events. 1.5's fall into that low threshold easily confused with man made events. Source multiple stations. That is key.

On another note with this Oct. 1 update, there were no swarms in September. Comforting, eh?

Hey thanks dear, hadn't seen your name in a while!

I guess Yellowstone has left the doom watchers kind of holding the bag huh? No doom, no eruption. I think that place may be on the final death spiral. No eruption in our lifetimes! At least I hope not.

And since all the activity has died down, I must question why we really need the YVO anymore? Why do my tax dollars need to be spent on a dead volcano? Do we really need to be told it isn't going to erupt anymore? OK!!!! I got it!

In the meantime, watch out for those 1.5's. It is critical that I know another 1.5 meaningless microquake hit somewhere in Yellowstone. So critical that a hungry mouth wasn't fed because of it.
