The very beginning of our country and the decisions made every day since, are exactly what has led us to this very moment in time. As I recall "the other party" has had ample opportunity to pitch in and straighten out a few problems, but they haven't.

I personally think the word socialist and socialism is used as a cultural wedge, to create a much easier playing field for divide and conquer. Our country is suffering from over a quarter of a century of constantly reduced funding in education and an ongoing effort from both parties to divide the nation down stupid red-blue lines.

Most people don't even know the difference between a communist and a Nazi.
Most people buy the propaganda that Nazis were socialists when in fact, they were right wing extremists who used the term 'socialist party' to attract members in a time when it was popular.
Most people have no clue as to how a nation can be split down the center and its people turned inward to fight their very own neighbors.

In case you don't know it those who promote the idea of democratic socialism know quite well that it is a lie. So easy it is to frighten the ignorant masses and cause them to move to the right. This, of course, is what the manipulators want. They want us to become so ultra conservative that libertarianism will be the only viable alternative. Why would they do this? Easy. When corporations finally wield unfettered power in any way they want to throughout the entire world they will become the masters. All governments will then be irrelevant and we will become no more than controlled consumers who exist only by leave of the "corporation".

When we hear of "free markets" this is exactly what that term means. Bad news for working people.

The fun part for all these righties is that all they have to do is to stir up emotion by invoking gun rights, gay issues, race issues, Obama is Kenyan, Obama is the anti-christ, "restoring honor", "returning America to it's rightful place in the world", and, above all shouting slogans of "liberty from oppression". Then all the ignorant little people will make signs with mis-spelled words and crude messages and stand yelling while the manipulating billionaires all sit in the back seats of their Rolls-Royces sipping brandy and laughing to themselves.

When this comes to pass our military will be privatized, be subjected to terrible injustices and be used, not for defense, but for forcing acquiescence from others around the world to our corporations.

Then, when it all finally comes to pass, when they win and they will, shock will replace glee when everyone finds out that Social Security is gone, unemployment insurance is gone, benefits for the poor are gone, federal aid to education, for highways, for utilities...and so much more all will be gone. Business will no longer have to pay taxes nor will they have any qualms about the majority of workers being part timers or "independent contractors". Get sick, lose your job. Retirement? Go live with your kids. Elderly and sick? Die on the streets or go begging at a church door.

That is the America that the libertarians dream of. The land where corporations do whatever they please without being concerned with "truth in advertising" or harmful products. The only recourse citizens will have under this system is to bring a suit against them. Ha. It would take generations for any settlement to be reached because of all the high priced lawyeral maneuvering by the big guys.

Overall result will be a return to an ancient world model where bands of ordinary folk group together in survival units here and there with all the prime bits of earth taken over by banks and their cronies.

The average republican now is playing right into this idea but they do not realize it. Sure go ahead and vote all the republicans in in November but don't be surprised when, six months later, social security and all the other good things that we enjoy all go away in the name of "freedom". Yep. We will then be free. Free to move out of our homes which get seized in tax liens or by mortgage holders. Some freedom.

I mean, hell, we are a republic but the only place I ever see it is in the Constitution. Other places put it in their name for public relations. Countries that use the word 'Republic' in their official name to describe themselves usually are exactly that: a government having a chief of state that is not a monarch. The USA and China are both good examples of that.

Countries that use the 'Democratic' in their official name are seldom that. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a case in point. Of course the DPRK is also, apparently, the exception to the rule about no Monarch as the Head of State. Kim I, II and now III sounds a lot like an hereditary monarchy to me, even if they don't like to give it the name. The games people play with their country names to pretend they are something they are not doesn't change the reality of the proper use of the words.

The USA is a Republic because it doesn't have a monarch as head of state. That does not imply anything one way or another about the form of the Government. It happens that the form of government defined in the Constitution is a representative democracy. America is BOTH a Republic and a Democracy at the same time. Other countries are BOTH Monarchies and Democracies, at the same time (Australia, Canada, UK).

Republic and democracy are not mutually exclusive, they are complimentary and refer to different concepts.

Definition 1b(1) above is the definition that Jefferson and most other founding fathers intended when they mentioned a republic, and I suspect that is what you are referring to as well. The problem is you are mistaken to think that that is THE definition of a republic, and Jefferson was always, every time he used the word, using it as a shorthand for a "republican representative democracy" that he was contrasting with a "monarchical representative democracy" like Great Britain (or a theocracy like Iran).

Jefferson was aware that a 'pure' democracy wouldn't work beyond small groups, and was the idea of a 'representative democracy' and that form of government was trivially mundane to everyone. Great Britain had operated a representative democracy for centuries, but with a monarch as head of state. There was no need for him to describe or justify democracy to his readers; what was new was a republic. This is what had to be explained, and that is why many people today conflate 'republic' with 'representative democracy'.

Democrats are a complete danger to society, and they should be tried for treason at the full extent of the law. Even though they will win in November, I think there should be some serious talk about what to do next. Somehow they need to be hunted down, thrown in jail, and forgotten.

I would say they're more marxist/communist than socialist they way they've trample all over the Constitution and Bill of Rights. On my 68 years on this planet I've always considered myself an Independent but Not anymore, the Democrats have swung so far to the Left it's scary.
