BBC NEW - Ed Miliband New Leader

Ed Miliband has been announced as the new leader of the Labour Party ahead of their party conference in Manchester. He beat brother David by the wafer thin margin of 50.65% to 49.35% after second, third and fourth preference votes came into play. Ed Balls was third, Andy Burnham fourth and Diane Abbott last in the ballot of Labour members and trade unionists.

Is he really the right choice?

I was hoping the Labour Party would wake up and ditch the mantle of the 'New Labour' and return to 'Old Labour'. I was hoping for Diane Abbott to win and bring Socialism back to an increasingly Neoliberal and Corporatist party.

You Brits can have fun with your future years of more Tony Blair's.

Although Jewish, Ed is not a practising Jew because he is an atheist. That will mean that he is NOT a natural supporter of Israel's policies. His father was a student of Karl Marx and was buried near him in Highgate Cemetery, London, so, if Ed ever becomes Prime Minister, he will be the first atheist Prime Minister whose father was a Marxist. He will also be the first Prime Minister who is unmarried and has children.

Yes, a good break from the past, I would say.

I was pretty surprised Ed won. I thought David Milliband was being lined up as the next leader from news reports and comments nearing the end of Gordon Brown's term.

I did think David Milliband's face was a peach when Ed mentioned the invasion of Iraq was wrong.

La bour Party Conference: David Miliband 'criticises' Ed's Iraq War comment

and today David has resigned as a front bench MP and returned to being a back bencher.

I'm in no way a 'New Labour' supporter, so should be interesting to see how Ed fits into this role.
