Not really surprising, but many Americans are clueless when it comes to who believes what.
Not uncommon to not even know what their own religion says and teaches.Seems to be a hit or miss, but "by golly I believe in God" deal. I'm sure it's the same everywhere.
But I do wonder, if people were better educated, if they would still be as religious.

Many Americans Know Little About Relion-Poll Finds

You might think it would be important to people to understand at least what they purport to believe, but apparently not!

After two generations of being raised on Alien mythology
this is not surprising in the least. It's also dissingenuous.
This is like me going around and interviewing random people,
and concluding "no one in America understands Architecture, the
very science that built this country." When I could have interviewed
Architects, and not random people who know nothing about it, thus coloring the conclusion.

Hmmm.
I don't know if I like the analogy.
People tend to be very opinionated about religion, quite a few fanatical. Not only pro, but con.
I don't think architecture elicites such stron reactions!
They are not only adament about what they believe, but equally strongly against what they think are wrong beliefs. Of course ignorance has never stopped people from strong opinions!
Remember the old saying about religion and politics!
