CARACAS: As Venezuelans prepared to go to the polls, their President, Hugo Chavez, fronted what looked like a 1950s TV commercial. In a glossy kitchen
he was explaining to a housewife the wonders of a new fridge.
''Feel the lines on it. Nice, eh? And wait till I tell you about the discount,'' he said.
The price was not just a bargain, it was a socialist bargain, for this was a live broadcast from the presidential palace, Miraflores, and Mr Chavez
was selling more than just a fridge.
Hanging on ... a Chavez poster covers a phone booth as voters prepare for election day.
Mr Chavez.... Capitalist rip-off merchants were cheating the people, he said, but socialism would fix that. ''The Chavez price isn't even $US450
[$470] no … it's $US341!''...
at first i thought i was gonna hear that chavez would give you a fridge for voting for him, but no, he is only advertising a price reduction!!
he's reaching pretty hard if thats his only selling point on taking the vote.
