This is an almost one hour interview with Ahmadinejad.

It's a fairly good interview and he brings up alot of interesting topics such as a few members of the UN felt pressured to have UN sanctions on Iran.

The problem with President Ahmadinejad is that he says the same thing in his speeches and interviews that I say when chatting when friends, family and on discussion forums. I'm starting to suspect that he's activated the bug in my mobile phone!

Of course it cannot be true that Iranians would have freedom of speech and civil liberties. That would go completely against the picture of Iran that western governments have painted for us.

Likewise, it cannot be true that Ahmadinejad is actually a reasonable human being despite how good a job he does at acting like one.

we are being lied to about Ahmadinejad ? if it walks likes a duck it quacks like a duck looks like a duck its a duck.

i wish the guy would asked Ahmadinejad :

why are you training and funding the taliban? "
why were training and funding and sending mercenaires into iraq?"
why are you still holding 2 american hostages and then come to the us to spew out the trash he does?
why are YOU killing americans?

obviously he didnt have the cajones to the only thing this country can do is get on their knees for iran after all iran is continuing hitlers work.

Some are so excited to paint the US and western world as villains that anyone that is against the US and western world is immediately deemed legitimate and honest by all of you. Unbelievable.

Actually, it's the fact that Ahmadinejad speaks the truth that makes him believable. If Obama or any of the major European leaders did the same thing, we'd immediately recognise it and praise them as well. Some "truths" you know in your heart that they're true, others you recognise because either you have sufficient direct evidence supporting it or overwhelming indirect evidence that leaves little room for doubt.

I've yet to hear Ahmadinejad say one thing that doesn't fit into the latter two categories.

On the other hand, everything that Obama says is already contradicted by his past actions and is soon contradicted by subsequent actions. His Nobel Peace Prize is a sick joke but highlights the disparity between what he promised and what he has delivered. I'm thinking now that they gave it to him either to embarrass him into "changing" US imperialism or specifically because it would show him for what he is - the leader of a warmongering nation.

Just for the record, I'm an American living in the UK. I don't have to paint the US and western nations as villians because the rest of the world already knows it and our actions speak for themselves - despite the endless right-wing propaganda heaped up on our own people.

"Press freedom violations recounted in real time (from 1st July 2010)
Lawyer who defends detained journalists is herself arrested
Regime continues to close newspapers, impose jail sentences on journalists
Sexual assault in prison
A year in prison and five-year political ban for dissident journalist"

Press Freedom Index 2009 Iran ranks 172/175
2008 166/173
2007 166/179

So basically Iran is nearly last in the Press Freedom Index!

Maybe the interviewer should ask:

Why are you helping a neighbour that many of your people share a common faith with?

Why are you aiding in the defense of a country in your region from a foreign invader?

It's so very easy to critisise them from here, but what if the shoe was on the other foot?

For example, if the United States was attacked by a foreign army, would you share the same contempt for Canadians if we came to help? Or for that matter Mexicans?

This is not a glowing report on press freedom in Iran. Though not defending their record, we should still view it in context with other countries that we have apparently have no concerns about, for instance, Saudi Arabia:

2009 163
2008 161
2007 148

When do we start threatening to invade Saudi Arabia?

Getting back to Iran, let's hear their side of the story:

Source: Reporters Without Borders
Shortly after its creation, the [Organised Crime Surveillance] centre announced the dismantling of a “malevolent” online network in March 2009 and the arrests of several website moderators. Their photos and “confessions” were posted on the centre’s website, Gerdab (www.gerdab.ir), a few days later. They reportedly admitted to links with websites that criticised Islam and the government, and to their intention of “misleading” Iranian youth by publicising porn sites. They also confessed to participating in a plot supported by the Americans and Israelis.

On 17 June 2009, two days after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s disputed reelection triggered a wave of street protests, the centre issued a communiqué announcing that it had noted “several cases of websites and personal blogs posting articles inciting disturbances of public order and urging the population to rebel.”

“These sites, created with the help of American and Canadian companies, receive the support of media that are protected by the American and British security services such as the BBC, Radio Farda (Free Europe) and Radio Zamaneh,” the statement added, urging website managers to suppress “content that incites the population to riot and spreads threats and rumours.”

Maybe it's all trumped up fiction but as cover stories go, it's much better than the ones we used to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.
