I'm confused.

Bert and Ernie can be "room mates" and Miss Piggy can lust after Kermit but Katy Perry can't sing a catchy tune in a tacky Barbie dress?

As a mom I would have selected a different outfit for her to wear but I doubt the kiddies were looking at her cleavage, they were watching Elmo.

At least she didn't kiss a girl.

Listening to a song about kissing a girl doesnt effects someone's sexuality. I have many pictures of myself as a kid dressed in my mom's clothes. And I am a straight married to a lovely woman.

Other than that, I am pro lesbianism. The next president of Brazil is going to be a lesbian, so what's wrong with that? Ok, not a fair question, since I know you are not implying there is anything wrong with it and I don't intend to deviate from the main topic...although something tells me I should, since the topic is silly.

Maybe, if we get a lesbian president, she should invite Kate Perry to sing at the after-election party.

EDIT to add that it seems like I am opposing kosmickjack's point of view, which I am not. Sorry for my bad english(sometimes, since it is not THAT bad). =P

The avatar is actually a represenation of a character from a book series, Simi, from the Dark Hunter series known as Xiamara. Its a long story behind it... And you get it if you Read that book series has nothing to do with sexualization. Its the Simi shes my fave character from this series, and there are few pictures of her...

You know what I just read?

"Blah blah blah garters blah blah fishnet stockings blah blah blah bustier blah blah blah cleavage." The context of your picture matters not. I do not see you asking for the context behind Perry's cleavage so why should I know the context of yours? Cleavge is cleavage and slutty clothing is slutty clothing. You character could be dressed like a dominatrix and you can tell me she is some comic book christian crusader. I will still see a woman dressed as a dominatrix. I hope you can understand that.

Are you really trying to say that a 7 year old child can game something good from the cleavage in your avatar but something bad from the cleavage on Sesame Street?

When I was young and that show was on the air, I actually had friends that were not allowed to watch it because the parents knew his HBO special of the same name was actually for adults so they just assumed his Saturday morning show was vulgar too. I cannot even begin to describe how damaged that household turned out to be.

Explanation: 1st thing OL auto noticed was the wedding like headwear and then the non white dress... it also didn't make sense elmo playing catch with her.. WTFH??? did she think they were playing and whats with the "oh noze! not again!" comment! Its Freaking BIZZARO!

Personal Disclosure: I loved it... but would I let kids watch it???
The message I got made no sense in the context of a childs world? So nope!

I noticed when watching my children grow up, that they don't really notice nudity or sexuality in any other sense then normal infant/youth curiosity.

Per that I don't see anything wrong with how Katy Perry was dressed at all.

I can't comment on the song lyrics as I don't have audio at work, and no subtitles.

What I don't personally like is having "pop stars" on children shows, and that is based on the amazing amount of problems (mostly drug related) that a lot of these current young pop stars seem to get involved with.

And, with a rumour going around, that Katy Perry has been less than honest with coc aine use, I don't like having her presented as a potential role model for my kids.

How about the generation of girls that grew up with Birtany....starting with a sweet young popstar on lunch box...and then into what it became later....lite porno among other things.

Isn't that outfit for sale in Disney Stores all over the world? I'm sure it has a tinkerbell label and comes in pink, lemon or lime green.

Gawd...

Once again it's proven that you can expose your kid to countless atrocities on tv, but not a set of "covered" boobs. Is there ANY question at all why society is so screwed up?

And as far as women being treated as objects, I have just never heard of a woman complaining of the benefits of her sexuality. As an employer, at least in this country there are MANY resources available to women to combat sexual harassment at the workplace, so any person who is putting up with it is doing so at their discretion. Losing her job is quickly offset by the huge payout in suing her employer.

Wow way to use personal insult and go off topic.

Anyway, the only problem I have with the video is it makes no sense and seems to be directed more toward parents and less for children. I understand that the show has to make revenue somehow but I think it's a little blatant. I'm glad it didn't air.

Skip to the 1:23 mark in this episode

Look, my avatar has nothing to do with the treatment of women or any context it is not a represntation of me I could have a duck as my avatar... And really so what if perry showed her boobs who really cares, it really is the message. If shes blatently telling kids to act slutty thats fine but really are 3 and 4 year olds looking at boobs no, its adults who look at breasts. she could be wearing a sheet over her head or a bikini and they wouldn't care less they would just go Hey its halloween!! Its honestly the parents who take the message the wrong way and teach it to thir kids.

What do you see? Dolphins or sex? I see sex first but a child sees dolphins. Yes the dolphins are there look it up.

My comments were about the treatment of women, if you want the sexualized approach its wrong but it happens and thats why we have femminism, my avatar has nothing to do with it at all I don't dress like a slut I just like the character.. If you want to make it sexual go ahead I can't stop you.

I can't find the dolphins!!!!!!

I mean I really tried to see the dolphins but they're just not coming into focus for me!

Now on topic:

If a six or seven year old kid is aware enough of sexuality to be offended by the Katy Perry thing, then that's probably a red flag for way bigger problems than something they've seen on Sesame Street.

If the kids are focusing on her breasts, then we have already lost the war on breasts.

Honestly, the kids aren't going to even think twice about what she is wearing because:

  1. Kids don't have hormones
  2. Kids focus on Elmo
  3. What she was wearing is silly, not sexy
  4. Barbie/Brats/Etc. wear this kind of stuff all the time anyways
  5. We are projecting what WE SEE onto what children see

In short, this is a red herring. Kids' cartoons/TV shows have all kinds of women/girls in outfits much "worse" than what Katy Perry had on in this skit. This whole ordeal makes everyone feel better that our society appears to be taking a stand on the hypersexualization of our nation's children by the mass media, when in fact it is only taking the focus off of the real violations.

Lol, to me Britany (Spears I am assuming) is part of the young pop stars group that I am not a fan of.

Not that I can say too much, most of the "pop" stars from my youth are either dead or still having drug issues.

Oh Americans and the natural human form, how they hate it.

This is stupid. Kids know women have breasts, and they don't have an issue with it. When they go to the beach in the Summer, they see much more. In no way would viewing that at any age be bad/harmful to a child.
