Seems like a strange story right enough.

I do know that here in the UK, when you send an SMS text message to a landline telephone, the receiver, upon answering, is read the message by a robotic sounding voice software, much like the voice synthesis on your standard windows PC.

Is it possible some locals heard about their story and sent them a SMS to their landline in an effort to ridicule/mock them? or just for kicks maybe?

edit on 21-9-2010 by Morgil because: typo

Further to my previous post, Here is some info on text to voice for landlines, the standard voice is apparently female as per the story:

Choose a male or female voice to read your text
If you send a text message to a UK landline you can choose to have it read out by a male voice rather than the standard female voice. To choose a male voice, just key in *M# at the start of your message.

e.g. *M# Missing you, wish you were here. Can't wait to get home xxxxx

The Voice of the Text will even blow kisses. If you write 'xx' the voice will say "kiss kiss" and if you include four or more x's it will say "loads of kisses".

From here

Also a video example, its kind of stupid, some kids making the voice sing a song but it gives an idea of the voice:

This seems like the most plausible cause.
