Bet you though I was going to post on some of those Maglev trains popping up around the world eh?

Well maybe later..

Right now this one is from those crazy French... pretty awesome for an electric train with steel wheels and rails

I wonder how long it takes for it to do an emergency stop. Like when an earthquake hits, I routinely ride my motorcycle at 300kph and any small variation in elevation of the highway seems like is magnified tenfold so I can just imagine what would happen in an earthquake.

Splendid feats of engineering Zorgon.

Perhaps the greatest hurdle to faster speeds is good old fashioned friction.

One for the future might be Mag-Lev`s travelling through a neutrally buoyant vacuum tunnel , perhaps between N.America and Europe. Submerged beneath the Atlanic Ocean to a depth of 300Ft and tethered to the ocean floor.

With the current state of the airline industry , it might just become a reality in our lifetime. But it would , as you would imagine , not come cheap.

As envisioned by Frankel and Frank Davidson, a former MIT researcher and early member of the first formal English Channel Tunnel study group, sections of neutrally buoyant tunnel submerged 150 to 300 feet beneath the surface of the Atlantic, then anchored to the seafloor–thereby avoiding the high pressures of the deep ocean. Then air would be pumped out, creating a vacuum, and alternating magnetic pulses would propel a magnetically levitated train capable of speeds up to 4,000 mph across the pond in an hour.

4,000 mph .........

Costs for such a project are estimated at between $25 and $50 million per mile.

This thread makes me sad. When compared to civilized nations on this planet, we look pretty pathetic in many regards, including transportation technology. Something is not done right in our country (well I know rarely anything is).

Only 4000 mph?

Well since this isn't in the conspiracy section... I won't post this...

Abstract:
The Very High Speed Transit or 'VHST' concept was put forward some years ago in response to the search for a pollution-free transport method that could operate at speeds competitive with aircraft. The general principles are relatively straightforward: Electromagnetically levitated and propelled cars in an evacuated tunnel. The VHST's 'tubecraft' ride on, and are driven by, electromagnetic (EM) waves much as a surfboard rides the ocean's waves. The EM waves are generated by pulsed or by oscillating currents in electrical conductors that form the 'roadbed' structure in the evacuated 'tubeway.' Opposing magnetic fields in the vehicle are generated by means of a loop of superconducting cable carrying on the order of a million amperes of current. The system is highly conservative of energy. Economic, environmental and technical aspects are briefly considered.

Oh wait I see a thread on that 1972 one... started by Jkrog08 (RIP)

You should add the new version you posted here to that thread. Thanks for that BTW, didn't have that one. What is interesting is the 4 tube tunnel is the same configuration as the old one. I will dig up that PDF link. It may even be in that thread

I cant believe that normal rail train went faster than a maglev.

Well yeah, I do recall reading about this in pop science magazines decades ago. Too bad the US never quite invested in anything progressive as far as transportation system goes. It's absolutely appalling that the majority of the cargo in the US is carried in trucks (hence need for huge quantities of oil etc.). If anything is "suppressed" in this country, it's not some alien tech or energy out of water generator, but simple common sense and the ability of the society to act as well, as a society as opposed to a bunch of lunatics screaming "socialism" when it comes to a national rail system.
