There are believed to be 13 skulls. 5 of them have been discovered and legend says that when the planet is facing danger, all 13 will come together to reveal information to protect us.
*Background info*
Many years ago (in the 1920's, I believe,) the first skull was found. Many people believed the skull to be a fake and believed that the ancient South Americans could not produce such a thing of beauty. So, Long after the first skull was discovered, scientists received permission to run tests on the skulls. They found that there were no tool marks or machine marks. Conclusion: the skulls should not even exist.
This conclusion has led some scientists to believe that the skulls are made from a technology far more advanced than our current state. Some have even gone as far as saying that present day humans are not the most advanced humans who have ever walked the planet. To support their claim, the skulls are made from the same material that computer chips are made from. Thus, they believe that they skulls are actually computers. The problem with this theory is the fact that no other technology or evidence has been found. If humans were to disappear today, think of everything we would leave behind. Certainly more than a few skulls. Any thoughts?

They're lovely, and they're modern frauds. The oldest one dates back to 1940.

The questionable origin of the Mitchell-Hedges skull has not deterred belief in the skull's mysterious properties. Rather, at least 13 other skulls have mysteriously appeared over the years. Some of these skulls are claimed to have magical origins and healing powers.

So... what do scientists REALLY think about them?

However, a study of several crystal skulls by the British Museum in 1996 indicates that the only magic involved in the creation of these skulls was in keeping their fraudulent origin a secret. The study concluded that the skulls were made in Germany within the past 150 years. The recent origin explains how they were made with tools unavailable to the ancient Mayans or Aztecs.

Scientists have stated for years that these things are modern frauds. So how do they know?

Using electron microscopes, the researchers found that two of the skulls possessed straight, perfectly-spaced surface markings, indicating the use of a modern polishing wheel. Genuine ancient objects would show haphazard tiny scratches from the hand-polishing process.*

Does that mean "alien technology"? No... because the "alien technology" isn't anything super-advanced. I have grinding tools and stoneworking tools and could turn out the exact same thing -- no aliens needed.

If you check with the tribal peoples who supposedly had these skulls, you'll find that they're not authentic artifacts and that nobody had any such legends (as are reported) about them.
