Gene therapy has been used for the first time to treat an inherited blood disorder in what doctors say is a major step forward. A man given pioneering treatment to correct a faulty gene has made "remarkable" progress, a US and French team has revealed.

It is quite remarkable how far gene therapy has come in such a short period of time. What first seemed like science fiction is quickly reaching the point where it will be an every day occurrence. I definitely want to keep following this case to see any side effects that may occur. I know there is a risk of cancer with treatments like this, and while he isn't out of the woods yet, he seems to be doing remarkably well. So, hopefully these scientists may have found a relatively safe way to insert new genes into a person's genome.
