It has emerged that the six Royal Marines who were detained may have been from the Special Boat Service.
The Daily Mail reports today that an anonymous source in the Iran Revolutionary Guard said that the equipment found on board of their boats were not
'standard issue', and includes 'night vision equipment' and 'automatic rifles' commonly used by the American Special Forces. Reports indicate
that some of the Marines were part of the 'Fleet Standby Rifle Troop', apparently based in Faslane (Scotland), and others from 45 Commando. Sergeant
Thomas Harkins, one of the marines held, is based and lives in Poole, Dorset, where the Royal Marines Special Boat Squadron is based.
Speculation is great over whether or not they are actually Special Forces soldiers doing a recce, or perhaps worse, inside Iran.
