I think it is the drugs.

They've got everything else, and now they are craving exotic brain candy.

....somewhere out there there might be 'pleasurebooths', where for a fee you can experience the sensations that the probe is experiencing - Live! And there are millions of probists touring the galaxy earning their living sending back probe data....

It is only a matter of time before this gets big in Japan.
