I do think it possible they were just hikers. The fact that the media never questioned that they weren't hikers leads me to think that they were agents of the US. I wonder what their objective was, so far away from the war? Could they have been sent to patronize the Kurds, or to gather information on the strength of the border, or to deliver some messages, money or equipment? Why send Americans when locals could be hired?
