Robotics breakthrough: Scientists make artificial skin

news.yahoo.com

PARIS (AFP) – Biotech wizards have engineered electronic skin that can sense touch, in a major step towards next-generation robotics and prosthetic limbs.

The lab-tested material responds to almost the same pressures as human skin and with the same speed, they reported in the British journal Nature Materials......."If we ever wanted a robot that could unload the dishes, for instance, we'd want to make sure it doesn't break the wine glasses in the process. But we'd also want the robot to grip the stock pot without dropping it."

The "e-skin" made by Javey's team comprises a matri

This is really kinda cool. I guess we could be living like the Jetsons soon, We could all have own robot maid like Rosie.

In a way it seems so sci-fi.. but it is no longer the future.. it is now.
It also could help people with prosthetic limbs actually have the sense of touch and feel again, and that is awesome.

Neat find!
That was one of the coolest things I've read in a long time. Even in it's infancy the artificial skin has a lot of promise. Now for them to figure a way to get the nerves to interact with it, we could have something to help those w/ prosthetics feel whole again.
