Quran burning flap a distraction from Obama agenda

WASHINGTON — First came the outrage over plans for a mosque near ground zero. Now there's anger over a Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Quran.
Caught up in it all is President Barack Obama, who'd rather be talking about something — anything — else.
Yet there he was on TV Thursday morning, denouncing the church's plans as a "stunt" that could "greatly endanger our young men and women who are in uniform" and incite suicide bombers.

I mean, is Qur'an burning deemed free speech the same sense as burning national flags, especially the Stars and Stripes Muslims tend to set alight?

Of course it is. Free speech is exactly that - free. Bibles, Korans, Flags, effigies of Obama, you can burn them all providing that you are not in violation of some fire code.

Book burning does have some bad precedents though. It seems every dictatorial and fundamentalist religious regime has a book burning phase to eliminate "subversive" influences.

So if they want to burn Korans go right ahead. The book will be in the esteemed company of old glory, Steinbeck and Madonna.

The media hype is pure distraction from more important issues. If Obama were truly worried about the effect it might have on our troops he would tell the media to not cover it. Or perhaps they just want to erode one more of our freedoms?

I believe this thread warrants its existence though since it's the first one to weigh in on Obamas speech about it.
This is the first time he spoke about it and so many people on ATS assumed that Obama would refrain from bringing it up at all. Well there it is. Out of all the things Obama has to worry about and is going on right now he decides to talk to the public about this?
The more I hear about this the more I feel like it's all one big setup.

Good job Obama, way to give Presidential attention on this.

Now half of America will be wondering why burning flags and bibles is considered expressions of the cherished diversity of the country and not some stunt that pisses of many Americans.

Way to go in bringing the office of the President of the United States into the matter of an irrelevant nut pastor.

Good job Obama, he stuck up for the mosque. I guess since it's not a stunt and this is he can feel like saying what he wants........way to be one sided.......seems to be a current theme in his administration.
