I dont consider telling your kids about Santa or the Easter bunny or the tooth fairy "lying". Its good for kids to have an imagination. When I was young, deep down, I knew it wasnt true. But I still loved to hear the stories and pretend that when my dad stomped on the roof and rang jingle bells that it was really santa claus.

Whats wrong with letting kids have an imagination? Its called a "white lie". They will face the real world soon enough. Let them enjoy their childhood.

No-one's disputing that fantasy & imagination are essential for young children. What we ARE saying is - once they ask, tell them the truth. And after reading through the views on this thread, I'm starting to question the value of those over-commercialised "white lies" such as Easter Bunny & Santa, especially after the child reaches 5.

I think we should worry more about the lies the media are feeding our children other than Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

If you examine what they are telling us then you'd understand what they are planting in the seeds of the next generation: Education.

You mean to tell me that they are not real? Are u serious....i hope you are joking.

Aww did I ruin your christmas? I'm sorry!

See what lying to our children does. It makes them still believe when they grow up and that's just not right.

There's enough threads on ATS that are far more unbelievable than the existence of Santa and the Easter Bunny

It's the guys who tell their kids that there are lizards hidden under the earth and that intergalactic war is going to happen in two weeks that I think we should be more concerned about.

Let the kids find out for themselves...life isn't some grand utopian playground.

Thank you Teknik...I enjoy being "shrinkwrapped" into generalized stereotypes of the secretive ATS society.

However, I think it's more important to not quablle over what the kid does when they find out santa does not exist, but to rather fill them with the proper knowledge and education that distills from their beliefs any false illusions...

I'm not trying to completely bash your theory...which I've noticed is always nevertheless followed in ATS by someone saying "Hardy har har, look at this fellow, he hasn't learned to deny ignorance yet!"

Allow me to retort my syaing that if I did not fall uner the general confines of what every member believes at ATS, I would have gone out and joined some simple-minded forum, like Yahoo...

This is why I like ATS and it's followers, but stereotyping is such a lame way to fight back.

...Of course I had to go and misspell ignorance, didn't I...

Ok, well first off, I was told there was a bunny, santa, ect........ And I turned out alright......And i'm sure you did too....
I'm sure those fiblets didn't stump your growth growing up did it?

I think you have a case of the oversensitive protector syndrome....

i found out where babies came from long before my parents told me. I don't hate them for lying to me.....
Children learn why their parents didn't want them telling them and then they go and make a bigger deal about it...

You could have the birds and the bees talk with you child at age 6 but I highly doubt he'll/ she'll understand or even care......
If she asks tell her, there's not harm unless you're prepared to have little to none of her school friends show up at her parties because those kids' parents didn't think it was right you tell her.

There comes a proper time for all this and when your a child , not a young teenager I don't think thats the right time......

When they start puberty is a good time for the sex talk........ Before then is just silly......

Sorry, but did you like it when ppl would tell you the needle that was going in your arm wouldn't hurt? Its not about the fat man!!! Its about the lies that go along with it and how far and long some parents drag it out!

It's all culturaly tied and related to the axact same thing as when you pass someone in the street and say "Hey, How ya doing?" - You don't expect them to spill their guts - in Europe it's more common to get that kind of a response, but it should be expeceted because usually they actually care and the person asking wants to know...it's all spin-off of the different forms of expectation that we have built into our modern day speech and culture.

And trying to change or modify a culture is something that requires hysteria or grave concern - That special 1% of the population who can't grasp reality and keep expecting to meet Sanata at the tree on christmas eve until they're 68 more than likely have other mental problems that stem from phsyiological disorders or emotional stress.

That portion of our population can be dealt with, and it does not require allowing a child to loose their imagination and distort our cultural values

Wow you apparently haven't been into a Junior High or Middle School lately. I'm still in High school I see the young girls getting pregnant or the young girls hurt because their boyfriend tried something on them. I've seen it and also I've seen these 7th graders who come to the "big school" and have already had sex and are on drugs and everything else you can think of. And I live in a small town. It may be worse in the Urban areas I don't know, I don't live there. But I see it every day at school. I hear it walking down the hall. These young kids who are only 12 and 13 at the oldest and walk around Cursing and talking about who did who last weekend and who got messed up with who. I'm not against Sex but these kids need to be at least taught about it so they know what they are doing and the consequences. My school sucks at SEX ED. You know why? We don't have it. In 6th grade the pulled out the PUBERTY MOVIE. They seperated the girls and the guys into different rooms and showed different movies. They explained about what an erection was and all this BS stuff. Dude in 6th grade I was a masturbating Machine. I knew what an ecrection was I got one EVERY DAY. I think Telling me about it in 6th grade is a little too late. I was very mature too. Both physically and mentally. I started getting pubic hair in 4th grade. And then they don't tell me what an erection is until 6th grade? There is something wrong with that. And they don't explain about sex. Because in this christian ran town that is a NO NO.

I'm not saying we have to tell our kids everything. But if they ask or if they become a certain age I think they need to know. And different kids mature at different ages so the parents need to be able to pick up when their own child needs to be told. I just think we need to educate our children better. And people will say that if we tell a kid about sex that will make them go out there and do it. NO! The kid is probably gonna do it whether we tell them about it or not. I started masturbating very early. Did my father tell me about it? Nope. I found out on my own. So kids are gonna go out there and do things whether we tell them what they are doing or not. We need to educate our children.

To all the people that keep bringing up Imagination: I NEVER ONCE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT NOT LETTING A CHILD HAVE AN IMAGINATION. I encourage imagination. I loved my imagination as a child and I still love it at times. Tell them about Santa and the Easter bunny but the first time they come up to their parents I think the parent should sit them down and explain that No santa really isn't real and a fat man can't go down chimmneys and take all the kids presents in the world in one night. And the parents should explain why they told the child that. I just think it's wrong to lie to our children directly to their faces.

And as a parent you should be able to talk to the chlid. Parents get embarassed over nothing. When a kid or a teen even asks their parents about sex they get red in the face and won't talk about it. Parents you had sex to have the child you should at least explain to the kid about it. And we wonder why there are so many STDs going around and so many teenaged pregnancies. Because the parents won't talk to their kids about sex. All those "Talk to your kids about drugs commericals" are great. But we need "Talk to your kids about SEX." They are gonna do it whether mommy and daddy approve or not so at least educate them on what they are doing. Tell them about birth control. Tell them to be careful. They need to know and they sure ain't gonna learn from school or friends.

Ahhh actually a girl was knocked up in grade 8 ... Why?? Because she was haning around trailor trash...

Her parents weren't the greatest role models, and she was a major attention whore and thought she would be cool because she was sexualized before any of the the other girls, bragging about giving blow jobs and sex ect...

grade 8......

Children are a product of their environment, her family was #ed up...

So don't preach to me about how I don't know... A girl decided to follow her... Her parents also were trash, one was an alcoholic and the other (mom) was always trying to appease her, and when she wasn't appeasing her she was insulting her ect... So those two girls both became attention whores and sexualized at an early age.

Well - if you follow this in a linear fashion then let's see what occurs:
Daddy tells little girl:

  1. All the toys I buy you for Christmas are going to a credit card with an APR of 25% and you'll actually be paying for all this when I die. Sleep tight honey bunny!
  2. That nickle I gave you for your first tooth actually came from the change I got from buying a Playboy because your mother just doens't cut it anymore.
  3. St. Patrick's day isn't about pinching your classmates, it's about drinking green beer until you puke and pass out in your car while driving home, leaving you without a father.
  4. Valentine's day will be a day you will soon treasue honey bumpkins - it'll be the day you loose your virginity to a the man you will marry. Later you'll divorce him because he'll beat you.

Is anyone following my thought-process here?
