Following up on camaro's thoughts, unfortunately that's a common thing in the South. Churches are often targets of arson, vandalism, 'soda-pop' kids; ie, the lye, bleach, and oxywash trick.

I happen to live in the town that this occured, and they've always violently opposed such things. They shut down a Bible Park they wanted to establish a few years back.

About the only thing we have currently similar is a Budhist temple, located less than 1 mile from the Stones River Battlefield.

But, as I originaly stated, the South is known for torching places of worship, and will probably continue to be.

It will also be deja-vu when it ends up being liberal stunt to make republicans look bad

Sorry to reiterate, but...

How do people know whether this was politically or religiously motivated, and not done for any other reason ?

Are people just forming assumptions as an excuse to have yet another thread filled with back-and-forth partisan bickering ?

We will not know what the motive for this crime was until the perpetrator has been convicted.
As that is a long way off, why speculate before then ?

I gotta give credit where credit is due

Congratulations, radical islam...you have used the rabid right wing as perfect tools for your hope of dividing and isolating muslims and eventually all minorities, create strife and civil unrest amongst the people itself.

I would not be overly suprised however if it was found out a radical muslim did this...this is a mindset, either done by someone trying very hard to create the strife (rad mus), or done by some moronic redneck whom is about as american as moondust.

Is it in the Constitution to call everyone in the south a racist redneck?

Feelings mutual. The point is still valid and the question stands. How do you think the gay community in San Francisco would feel with a mosque on every corner when they execute gay people in mecca?

As a gay "hillbilly", I prefer to take my chances with the bible thumpers. I may be shunned, but a lynching is much less likely than in Mecca.

Anyone familiar with the Scotch-Irish culture shouldn't be suprised by this reaction. That culture is historically quite aware of religious intolerance as practiced by religions answering to a central authority.
That's why they are there.
That's why Tennessee is there.
That's why there is no state religion in America.

As uncomfortable as it is, I can see how someone might view this as a pre-emptive move to protect their own religious freedom.

You mean the type of mob you want to let overrun the country, because that is what you will get. Your intrinsic values you have shown are in disagreement with what the Constitution stands for.

It was just probly a few good ol boys who had a few too many budweiser clamatos and decided "All hell with it let's burn it down." Good ol boy politics and actions are still very alive down here.

people always say you have to be tolerate.. but the islam isn't tolerate so why should we be tolerate toward in-tolerant politcal believe systems.

jews in israel have to be tolerant towards nazi's whom want to build a building in jerusalem worshiping adolf hitler??

to me that is namely one and the same as building a mosque in a country where another believe system is in place and where you are at war with for over 1500 years.

the crusades where there not for nothing , the crusades where held because of kicking the islam from the European continent , and for hundreds of years we had some religieous peace eventhough of the entlightment period ect. but now for 60 years muslims have misused the vacum gap after world war 2 and after the 50s the influence and control of islamistic supremaccy groups and countries is growing with the day , some parts of paris are under total sharia and muslim control even the police won't enter for fear of there life and people are still burning down cars and structures in paris and other parts of Eu.

yes I am a for religious freedom even though I don't thing religion is that important and is just the one and only cause of war in the world, but saying that I also say the islam is no religion but more a political stream just like facism , communism and socialism , and the only thing religious about the islam is that is like a cult where leaving it is only met with violence , murder and intimidation.

No evidence of anything save arson.

Rightwingers? Really? Where? Evidence, please. Oh yeah, there isn't any yet...

Yes, I know... Yet.

Leaping to conclusions is so much more fun than actually waiting for evidence.

The south has quite an assortment of political ideology, wukky. Stereotyping the lot of 'em is a bit of a low blow, don't you think?

In fairness, that's a completely flawed analogy.

In this instance we have a crime committed; the normal course of events is to wait until after due process to give any opinions and observations on the perpetrator's motivation for the crime.

If it turns out to be a vagrant that committed it for no particular reason, then that'll make the entire content of this thread redundant.

I hope none of you are police officers !

Well - I think that is unfounded hysteria.

And my ancestors are the Pennsylvania Dutch who arrived here in the 1700s. From the Palentines. Due to religious persecution.

I am - by the way - familiar with the Radical Scotch/Irish hillbillies. My hobby is cultural/social anthropology.

I don't give a damn if people call me a Nazi, which I find amusing since the Nazis liked Muslims and made two SS divisions out of them, or a bigot. So, those words mean nothing to me. Myself and the rest of the very heavily armed "Racist Southerners" are not going to allow alien culture to come in and disrupt the worship of Babby Jeebus.

"Babby Jeebus"???

Well the "heavily armed" south seemed to have no issue burning down the churches of "Babby Jesus" in the not so distant past as long as the congregation was a different skin color...and they could do so in a cowardly fashion in the dead of night....so at best your "babby Jeebus" bit seems inconsistent.

I wouldn't liken you to a Nazi...I rather see you for what you are...one of those folks that give the south a bad name...so utterly displeased with themselves that they desperately look to deride entire cultures and races just to salvage some false sense of relative self-worth...the kind of ignorant person that feeds the unfortunate stereotype that the south is full of intolerant inbreds. Likening you to a Nazi would be an undue promotion and would involve the assumption that you had the motor skills to button a uniform.
