Thinking about running for eighth grade class president at Mississippi's Nettleton Middle School? Are you white? Because only white kids can run for president. Black kids can be vice-president, though! But only black kids. Update: They changed the policy. A few days ago, Nettleton Middle School students brought home the following memo, which spells out the requirements for students who want to run for class office and was provided to blogger Suzy Richardson by a parent:

This is a really shocking article and sicking. I can't believe how this still exist in our country. What are your thoughts on this article?

There were some threads about this yesterday and, according to the reporting, the school changed the policy as soon as it became national news.

No problem R-R. I'm not in the habit of doing the whole "there already a thread...." thing, but I did so this time solely to let ya know that the school did fix their stuff - and fast, showing that they did know they were in the wrong.

Turns out they were trying to adhere to political correctness to such an extent that they ended up being more racist than they would have been otherwise.

I guess that's how people in the South interpret the current government.

Wow that's really messed up. I can't believe some adults in our school systems are that moronic.

There's 'racist' tones occuring nearly everyday in US schools, some more blatantly obvious than others though. For instance, pick any particular "cultural awareness" week or month, Cinco de Mayo, religious observations and the like. Simply recognizing the differing aspects of peoples' origins always elevates someone over someone else.

Schools should be teaching students how to read, write, do math and perform logical analysis; they should downplaying our differences, not singling them out.
Leave teaching heritage and familial culture to the family, where it belongs.

Since a majority of the offices were allocated to whites I would guess whites are a majority of the students in the school.

Make them race-blind, and whites will win all the offices.

Happy now?

Happy now? What in the world is race blind? Are you trying to say "Color Blind"?

Plus how can Whites only win; unless by your logic Blacks are not well equitable to be leaders. That's what I'm getting from your post.

OK now I read the article. The school is 72% white.

Yes, whites will tend to vote for whites and blacks for blacks. That is what I've observed, especially blacks voting as a bloc for blacks. Having observed that now esp. with Obama's election, and now that it's been rather publicly discussed, I think whites will become conscious of racial solidarity too.

Sad. Not sad. Whatever. You can be sad if you want. For me, it's the way it is, almost always in my observation. And whites are tired of being color-blind when nobody else is.

It is disgusting. I saw this on the news today. Isn't this the same state that allows teachers to hit the kids with a cane or a paddle if they feel it is necessary? How asinine and backwards can you get?

When the school was contacted they said they were still going over the procedures and rules and would not cop to anything. I have a feeling pressure from the public will make these school administrators come to their senses.

What worries me is that the kids must have had a say in this.

It is mind boggling.

Well, as long as the school canes 3 times as many whites as they do blacks, it should all be good, right?

I don't know why they would think they could do this.. Unless they thought they were doing them a favor.. Typical idiot school boards thinking they know whats good for kids.

You do realize this country is at least 70% White? White people had to vote for Obama in order for him to win. If your theory is correct he shouldn't be in there.

I love the veiled insult in that statement. Somehow people are so stupid they can only vote based on race. No logic involved, it's always just the white guys vote for the white guy, the black guy votes for the black guy

Exactly. It seems like to me that most white people think black only voted for Obama because he was black. Like if Jesse Jackson ran.. like he did back in the day, every black person voted for him.

Typical cop out. If every president was black and a white guy ran with the same platform and message as Obama a whole slew of white people would have voted for him too, but no one wants to bring that up..

This was most likely done to ensure that blacks would be forced to get certain positions, otherwise the school might have feared that all the positions would go to whites, so it is reverse discrimination in the same way that jobs are forced to hire minorities (will this still happen when whites are the minority?). Either way, it's messed up. At first I thought that maybe "white" and "black" meant something other than race, because that is just ridiculous either way. I would need to see all the facts, but I'm willing to bet this was done to ensure that blacks were not kept out of the elections, which in my opinion is still wrong.

edit: I read the article and looks like I was right

It is the belief of the current administration that these procedures were implemented to help ensure minority representation and involvement in the student body. It is felt the intent of these election procedures was to ensure African-American representation in each student office category through an annual rotation basis.

They also said in the article that a city court order forced them to do it that way, (edit: that may be in relation to using the mother's ethnicity, not the middle school elections). although now they say they have removed the ethnicity qualification to the elections.

Now all we need is someone to complain about the qualification of having a "B" average. Could you get disqualified from a job for not having a high enough IQ? Ha! We'll see how that one flies, probably right into the wall. Apparently society is okay with some forms of discrimination even though they do not like to admit it, because they know that if you no longer discriminate based on intelligence, you'll have a nation of moron specialists.

I don't believe parents have the right or need to strike their own children.

Why would I think a teacher does?

Some parents "need" to strike kids just to get rid of their own aggravation and frustration. Let's not mistake this flailing about for anything resembling guidance or education.
It is a frenzy of lost control and a bad example, that's all.

What is most disappointing is the policy was changed "after" it became national news. These hillbillys didn't realize, on their own, that this was/is wrong.

I really hope someone sues the living sh*t out of the district to force them into the 21st century. How many other regulations do they have that has made the news. Do they still have separate drinking fountains and restroom for the whites and colored?

Can the kids eat together and play together?

This sounds silly, but I grew up with segregation in place and it was the norm. I saw this first hand. Then I experienced desegregation. The very first black kid I shared a classroom with, I was a sophomore in high school.

You can make all the excuses or try to explain this off as something else. No, it's blatant racism. It's sad that this crap is still going on in the USA.

since you called this school "hillbillies" I'm guessing you assumed that they did this to discriminate against blacks, but if you read the article, it was done FOR blacks.

I'm an old white guy. I know keeping people in their place is "the best" for them. I saw this first hand over 50 years ago. At least that's what we were told back then.

Yeah, they're racist hillbillys. You think whatever you want, it's your very right to be as stupid as possible.

Have you noticed that no minority can participate as president? Get real...
