Right. 'Cause he's a 41 year old priest I should see him crucified because it's the right thing to believe. Hell, let's do the same to Donald Trump and all the other dudes out there that are in a relationship with females 20+ years younger than them.

Again, if the priest raped the girl I would think that the priest and the girl's parents are in the wrong. Hell, I'd even blame the girl for being so irresponsbile at 18. Just because she's a girl doesn't mean she's a vulnerable nitwit without a brain.

Thing is, if she wanted it, she wanted it. She's of legal age and she's responsible for herself. This is really silly.

I see this as nothing but a frivolous lawsuit. As a priest, he did something very morally and ethically wrong and will have to presumably deal with his decision to a greater entity upon his death. He was removed from his assignment within the church and has not functioned within it since November. Unfortunately, he'll probably be shipped to a different area to become part of a different church, which I disagree with.

Legally, he had sex with a consensual adult. The lawsuit doesn't mention statuary rape as a few have suggested, but rather "punitive damages for breach of fiduciary duty, infliction of emotional distress and gross negligence", so I have to assume it was consensual the entire time. The lawsuit starts with "punitive damages", which speaks volumes to me. Legally he'll have to maintain financial support for his child and in my mind by doing so he'll fulfill his legal obligations.

Growing up in a Catholic Church setting I was quite surprised when I realized that not all religions require celibacy and abstinence. It's something I've never understood, especially when priests counsel their parishioners on marriage issues. I'm not using it to defend the priests' actions but maybe the church should reconsider depriving carnal desires from human beings.

The video taping is questionable on a few levels but society, or the courts, have unfortunately taught us that video is excellent proof. Proof of what is questionable in this case as I see this as frivolous.

Well for starters it wouldn't happen. Instead, I would teach my daughter from an early age to perceive and feel the intent of people in the world around her. I wouldn't be the overprotective, minivan driving dad that would follow my daughter everywhere on her dates and text her continually saying "Are you ok? What is he talking to you about? Forget about having sex, otherwise I will disown you" type of crap. No, I would make sure that she's smart enough to make good decisions on her own.

What's the point of shielding kids for their whole life? They're only going to find out that the world is a beautiful place filled with ugly things, anyway.

Also, if this was my daughter, she wouldn't be filmed. In fact, if this was my daughter, I'd trust that she has the decent sense to not do a 41 year old man. And if she did screw a 41 year old man, I'd just punch the guy in the face and warn him to stay away. A lesson learned, and we could all get on with our lives. Then I would discuss how this happened with my daughter and maybe she'd learn a valuable lesson about how she flaunts her sexuality.

Though, that is where I could be seen as a hypocrite, 'cause if I had an 18 year old son that did a 41 year old woman with her consent, I'd probably give him a high five and a cigar.

I am much older now, and I know that I did this to him. It was my fault that he lost his wife, my fault that he lost his home, his job, barely saw his kids. You know why? Because even at 13 I knew I was in the wrong, and I knew he had no control. If I were 18 when this happened, nothing at all should be said, except that he was married.

I am not saying all girls or that even this girl behaved as I did, I just point out my actions at a young age and show that this is pretty typical behaviour. I was but one of my many young friends who experienced moments like this, it is a challenge many blooming young ladies take.

Sounds to me like the parent's were trying to make their daughter into a porn star and they lost revenue because the priest knocked up their daughter, then they decided to sue.

Most fathers would have beat the hell out of the priest.

There are obviously words for what you were that I wont mention but there is also an expectation that a "mature" male has a moral obligation to help children, not take advantage of them..

This whole thread has lowered into the realms of "who is more wrong" instaed of focusing on the facts..

The parents, the daughter and the Priest were "all" wrong...

I would say the parents and definetly the priest..

Why? Because both were in a position to influence the girls beliefs...

It is socially unacceptable for those in a position of authority to date their subordinates,
Because there is a 99% chance that they will abuse their position of authority,
Such as an employee getting fired for refusing to have sex with the boss,
A teacher failing the student from class for refusing to have sex,
A priest making a worshiper believe they will go to hell for eternity if they refuse to have sex
etc etc

A Boss and an employee
A President and an intern
College teachers and students
Priests and highschool catholic girls
A cop and a prisoner
A doctor and a patient

You were a precocious child and he was an adult. Even Lolita, vixen extraordinaire, was still a child.

I don't think the parents did anything wrong. Nor do I think they set this guy up. (but then I believed the balloon boys dad too)
It is their home and they can put cameras where they want to. I don't for a minute think they expected to catch their daughter having sex with a priest.
I'd guess this was a surprise. If they were really setting the priest up they would have caught the sex before she turned 18...or tried to.
