Regardless of the age of the girl, her maturity level or her previous sexual history, this guy is a piece of garbage. I did not refer to him as a Priest, because just wearing the collar doesn't make one so. A true Priest would not be in this situation.

This is a case of a predator using his hijacked position to take advantage of an easily impressionable young girl. It happens everyday, involving people of many different careers. From the manager at the local grocery store to professional athletes to US presidents (yes that is a lower case letter p, intentionally). Those who use their professional influence to prey on the vulnerable are scum, regardless of the position they occupy.

After reading the posts which kept using the plural terms "these" and "those" and "priests", I had to go back and read the article, again, to see if I had missed something. Of course, I had not. Bonilla is the only person accused of wrongdoing, in this incident. You people should go back and correct your posts to correlate to the facts. Change "these" to "this" and priests to priest. It will give you more credibility to not post in generalities, in cases like this.

I get the distinct feeling many did not read the source article, which includes these statements:

"He has no assignment and he has not functioned as a priest since November," diocesan spokesman Matt Kerr

Apart from the usual paternity suit, and child maintenance, there is no civil law against consensual sex with an 18 year old woman, priest or not.

But in Cannon Law, AND BEFORE GOD, this is completely unacceptable.

That priest has taken serious sacred vows, and was placed in a privileged position of trust that he shamefully betrayed.

The real evil here is not just some randy young fool of a priest, but the Church itself that goes to extreme lengths to hide and cover this type of thing up.

That priest should be defrocked, excommunicated, and publicly shamed..
But unfortunately he will probably just be promoted and moved to another parish.

Priests are in a position of trust. This priest has abused that trust. There's a code of conduct that is expected from them. It's not like he's an everyday kinda guy that you would expect may be trying to get into your daughters panties.

In any case, the girl may be 18 but that doesn't mean to say she wasn't swayed into the bedroom by someone of authoritative position that was abusing the trust placed upon him by the community... and the young lady.

Just like in the workplace, sexual abuse by a person of authority upon an employee often goes the way of the employee in a court of law. At the very least, this guy should be excommunicated.

There's also the real possibility that this priest may have been laying the groundwork or even making the moves while the girl was under aged. In any case, the priest is lucky he just got filmed. If I was the father, there's a high chance the priest would have been studying the afterlife according to the bible first hand.

And...Bonilla was 41 occupying a position of "power", which should demand a higher level of self control. Being in such a position, probably having received extensive training in avoiding these situations, should have made the right choice. He is the one who should have said "no", if the girl came onto him. That would have been the responsible thing to do. You can not absolve him of all responsibility, simply because the girl "had a choice". That is a ridiculous assertion and quite lop-sided.

If this had been an occurrence between the girl and a peer, I could possibly give some credence to your argument. But, not when the predator is abusing the pedestal, which he erroneously occupied, which was created for true Priests and bolstered by, most likely, every adult the girl has known since she was born.

I wish people would grow the hell up and stop blaming their problems on the innocent ones around them.

Agreed. Bonilla is 41 years old. He should accept responsibility for his actions and not blame the innocent girl (though I do not know that he has).

I bet she's the type of girl that has her address and phone number on Facebook, with all the profile options on public.

Either way, she just wanted herself some man, and he wanted himself some young lovin'. C'mon, she's 18. It's not as if she's 8.

Y'know, he probably feels like he has just suffered from a bout of entrapment. I wouldn't blame him, either.
