I have been overly curious about Reiki Therapy for the past few months. I have looked all over the internet and a couple places near me offer classes. One at a hospital near me, but the waiting list is 2 years, and its only for Cancer patients. They said it was "alternative medicine for those who seeked it"... apparently not for all.
I also found some other ads online but it was about 300-500$ a class....and typically the class was only a hour long or so.

I have been un-able to actually find and locate INDIVIDUAL people who have had it done TO THEM, or have had loved ones treated with it, and seen first hand out its affected them either negatively or positively.
So with that said....has anyone Been or known someone treated with Reiki?

I have had about 8 sessions of Reiki, in my quest for healing. I have a couple of chronic painful conditions.

It was such a success the 1st time, I did more of them.........usually about a month apart. In fact I think I could use another session soon as I haven't done one at all this year.

Its truly amazing to feel the heat that comes off the practitioners hands.

See this is the FIRST TIME i've heard ANYONE talk about a first hand account. So without a doubt in your mind its REAL?....
Not that i doubt it or anything it just seems like "to good to be true" type of scenario.

well................my pain IS LESS, and became noticeably less after the hot hands seemed to amp up the pain a bit during the session. it 'seemed' as if the healer was helping to 'burn out' the pain somehow.

The fact that I have felt SO MUCH BETTER to the point of not even feeling like I needed another appointment for the longest while.
My back and shoulders have been being more achy as of late, so it seems like its slowly returning and was not banished for good.

I DO think it is real.........because I have felt the results. The Reiki was far more effective than many of the pharmaceuticals the Dr prescribed.
It certainly did not hurt to give it a try.

Why not get some books on Reiki and learn to do it yourself?
Or you can always goto youtube and watch the Reiki videos there, especially look for those on self attunement.

Reiki simply means Universal Life Force in Japanese...that life force is in all living things including YOU!

Kind regards

Hello kaskade, I would not consider it a type of cure all, but I have experienced it and for me it was beneficial. It is a slow shaking or rocking back and forth of the muscles and joints. It relieved tension and made me feel lighter on my feet. It also took away pain sustained from prior injuries.
I have a few friends that are certified therapists and they use Reiki not exclusively, but along side other styles.

I had a Reiki session once; I didn't feel a thing. For me it was totally useless.

To be fair, I had a suspicion that the practitioner was interested in me romantically/sexually so I was on my guard during it and that probably doesn't help with "energy flow" in the body

Many years ago when I worked on the oncology floor of a research hospital, one of the nurses there was in the middle of a research protocol on the use of Reiki in treating pain and fatigue in cancer patients. The results were good enough that the study was published in a major peer reviewed medical journal.

I'm a bit confused by your post though -- are you interested in being trained in Reiki or in receiving a treatment?

But you have to believe MMN

But seriously, I can relate to what you are saying for I have had sessions with different practitioners and the variation in their strength and application of pressure makes a substantial difference in the results.
I think it can be good for alleviating stress too.

ETA: I would not consider Reiki something that "heals" anything beyond tension and stressed circulation, and to alleviate pain associated with them, depending on the injury. In fact, as far as treatment for an injury, I say no.
The "healing" part of Reiki is better associated with holistic rather than specific.

I have also had a few sessions of Reiki and have also felt the heat from the practitioner's hands. I did not attend the session because of physical pain so I can't say that helps physically but I did feel more balanced and at peace afterwords. So I would recommend you to try it but my advice would be to choose your practitioner carefully because it would be kind of easy for someone with limited knowledge to pretend they know what they're doing.

G'day speculativeoptimist!

Now.....I wonder if we're talking about the same thing.

This mate of mine (a senior specialist Dr from Sweden) did this energy thing, but he didn't touch me.

He sat me on a chair & waved his hands around me, but as I said, he didn't touch me.

Does that sound right?

Cheers

I was wondering the same thing too, MMN. During my treatment the practitioner didn't touch me at all either; he held his hands a couple inches from my body (though I was lying down on a massage table, not sitting up).

So I checked out Wikipedia, which says:

The treatment proceeds with the practitioner placing the hands on the recipient in various positions. However, practitioners may use a non-touching technique, where the hands are held a few centimetres away from the recipient's body for some or all of the positions. The hands are usually kept in a position for three to five minutes before moving to the next position.

That sounds more like some kind of chi work or jinshindo.
Or you are being funny(sometimes I can't tell)

Reiki uses palm pressure and rhythmic loosening of the muscles and joints.

Edit To Add: You guys are right, I remember the placement of palms an inch or so over my abdomen and chest. Hmmm, guess that is an energy facet of the practice. But that was only a part of the procedure, the rest entailed physical massage.

I have had maybe 5 sessions - 6 years or so ago. My first 2 sessions were close together and I was amazed at how well it worked. I then had the opportunity to read part of the book, I never did get into understanding the symbols. After that I had 3 other sessions and couldn't tell any difference at all. I was being treated for back pain. All I can say is it may or may not work for you. Unless you find a friend in the field there is usually a charge as with acupuncture. It would be best to find someone that has a Master's in Reiki. There are different degrees of learning and ability. And yes Reiki can be learned (it takes some time and effort) and self applied.

Reiki does not include physical massage - not that you cannot request a massage, it is just not part of Reiki. The hands are heated and placed over the portion of the body where it is needed - they are also scanned over the body to include the chakras.

You guys are right, I guess what I received was a combined form, and Reiki was mentioned in the mix.
So, the true Reiki, with hands above surface of skin, well I don't know about that because I haven't actually had one. Oh spec
