This article was put up recently.

www.news.com.au...

Though I dont believe in the whole 2012, world is going to end theory, I have been suggesting to people I know that they prepare for something, anything, just in case. Most think Im just a conspiracy nut, but you just have to look at how easily our power can go down.

While NASA's timeline is 100 days to 100 years, & while 2012 may just be a coincidence, its still not a bad idea to just have a few things stored away.

yeah i agree. but it is nice that our government is somewhat planning for this. NASA has about 3-4 minutes to warn the US's power grid of a temporary overload or "surge" of power. Now i hope when NASA comes calling the power companies will answer their phones. But there will still be major damages with the lines themselves. when a surge strikes the wires themselves swell up and actually become heavier, often hitting branches and trees causing shorts and power outages.

there really isnt anything we can do to STOP the threat all together. BUT we can create a guide/contingency plan for us to read off of when disaster strikes. We all dont want another Katrina do we?

Its hard to convince some people that we are vulnerable to unseen events like this and most will be happy to carry on with their lives assuming that nothing bad will ever happen. The trouble is when things go pear shaped and your the only one with a back up plan, they will be knocking on your door looking for help. This has happened before and will happen again .

that's right, all life on this planet hangs by the tiniest thread, we are nothing compared to what is out there!
jut to imagine 2 galaxies colliding sends shivers down my unconscious!, imagine if this galaxy collided (which eventually will) with another one, we and many hypothetical others living out there would be wiped out without any one blinking, a rogue meteorite could devastate us in a heartbeat, our own western culture relies on pure belief in our "foolproof" system, ever read anything by H.P. Lovecraft

i believe its the same thing, but our world now has nukes, techno terrorists, and all of the predictions of 1984 becoming a reality.

some say ignorance is bliss, but I'd rather know what hit me!

as has been stated by posters, the wise thing would be to prepare, just in case, because if 2012, and solar flares don't kill us, we will!

Thanks to the satellites we've got looking at the Sun, we would usually have at least a day or two of warning about a CME. Even the Carrington Event (1859) took 18 hours to occur after the flare which was associated with the CME was observed.

The magnetic disturbance can cause power surges in transmission lines but it does not cause power lines to get heavier.

but are the satellites that are watching the sun protected from such CME's?? if the blast was strong enough it could damage the satellites or at minimum distrupt the signal transmission?

your right wires dont get heavier but the definitly get hotter and expand to some degree....industrial electrician by trade

The STEREO satellites that orbit the sun are separated by about 150 degrees, with the earth in between them, so there is +/- 70 degrees between each satellite and earth.

This means that an earth bound CME or solar flare won't effect the satellites, that isn't to say that the satellites haven't been hit before, they have, numerous times and so far it hasn't effected them.

You would be quite surprised at just how hardy these satellites actually are, some are well placed to monitor intense activity.
However with warnings and predictions getting better with the more data collected sattelite operators can choose to do a couple of things to avoid or limit damage. Firstly they can put the satellite into sleep mode effectively shutting down the power systems.
Also if the satellite is in the right place they can perform a drag and drop the satellite into a lower orbit where it will have more protection from harm.

They are hardly defenseless.

Good luck to them dealing with "the blast will have the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs." LOL

This is just too funny.

Explains what is going one .. the Galactic Superwave is comeing...with the SuperWave time line you can trace it back to the creation of Our Black hole...It is a Magnetic Charge sent from the galaxys black hole which caused the creation of our Sun/Sol and still to this day causes star formation in the galaxy even created the spiral ripple effect of our galaxy spiral arms the pulse is jeted out every 10,000 years .. and the next wave is to hit 2012 after that another wave 12901 years after.. and the last one just flared out not ony 300 years ago.. head again our way..well across entire galaxy .. You must realize the Black Hole is connected to the Galaxy and connected to Sol and even connected the the Earth it's one big gravity magnet...and the driving force of the galaxy

Oh that is so funny.

Just before I started this thread, I emailed the same link to my cleaner, with the subject "I Told You So !" I cant wait for her to come next week.

She thought I was a nut until I explained I didnt believe in the 2012 'world is ending' theory, but I did warn her about the sun, quite some time ago, & that it doesnt hurt to have a few things stored away in case of ANY event. How many of us have a simple candle in easy reach for a simple blackout ? Thats all it took to win my girlfriend over, an hour without electronics !

haha you got it buddy. It cant hurt to be prepared. There will be so many running around like monkeys cos their ipods and lights dont work when TSHTF. You and me will just be chillin. Ill be sippin an ice cold beer from my fridge thats powered by my solar panel genny in my secret location.
