The cells were taken in chunks of rock from cliffs in the UK and stuck to the exterior of the International Space Station to see how long they could survive in the hostile conditions outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
When scientists inspected the bacteria a year and a half after they were launched into space in 2008, they found many were still alive despite having been exposed to extreme ultraviolet light, cosmic rays and dramatic shifts in temperature.
This discovery appears to support the theory that alien micro-organisms could be transported between planets in meteorites.

Actually, this has been known since Apollo. Apollo 12 returned a piece of one of the Surveyor landers, which had been on the moon for over three years, and when examined on earth they found a small amount of Streptococcus mitis in the foam around the camera:

here's hoping that the ockets that put people like Timothy Leary's ashes into space have some of this bacteria and will someday create a new and exciting world!

but it'll probably just be swallowed up by a massive black hole in 20 billion years
