PS...they are not causing controversy. Those people protesting are causing controversy. Beck, Palin, Hannity and the likes are causing controversy. Those Muslims are exercising their constitutional right to build that mosque. They are not causing controversy. They are exercising their rights.

Well I scanned through but no one answered my question. So I will ask it again.

Why not go after the people leasing the land this mosque will go on? That's a sure fire way to shut it down. We've established the Muslims have a right to build it. But you know what, the owners don't have a legal order to lease it to them. They don't have to lease to the Muslims if they don't want to. No one can force them to.

They (the owners) can shut it down. So I ask again.

The owners can shut all this down if you guys protested outside their lavish beach front property homes. I bet you guys don't even know who the owner is? I believe old mister Larry Silverstein is part owner. Same guy that took out insurance on the towers a month before they came down.
[edit on 23-8-2010 by Come Clean]

Why do the owners need a legal/court order to lease it?
If they have already signed a lease, they cannot just change their minds.
Also they cannot refuse to lease it on the basis of race or religion or anything elsse that is legal.

That was about the funniest zinger I have ever heard on ATS.

The sad thing is though is that too many people debating this issue do have this "sport" attitude in regards to it.

Like it's all a debate being played out in the vacuum of their living room or office instead of something being read around the world and giving America a bad name.

That is perhaps the most dangerous thing involved here, the wholesale wanton villification of whole swaths of people, that the people approaching it in this manner have never met.

People with real lives, real families, real hopes and dreams, being jeapordized ultimately by people who do appear willing and desperate enough to incite violence of their own against this mosque and community center.

Amazingly they wouldn't call that violence TERRORISM they would call it the "Right" thing to do.

They would be doing it all just to "Save" us, yet clearly many of us want 'saved' from people who think like this.

The name calling, the attempts at peer pressure, emotional manipulation, all add up to one thing, desperate people, who rely on desperate measures to attempt to dominate others, into a world of fear, and blind hate, that validates itself as they validate one another making it more and more real in their minds, as they and their minds become more and more isolated through a peer network, and news sources that they have succumbed to, that do validate them.

This has rapidly become one of the most troubling debates I have ever witnessed in my lifetime, and I am 46 years old.

That some liken it to just a game is utterly amazing.

You totally missed the point didn't you? That's what happens when passions become enflamed by Beck, Palin and Hannity.

Why are you guys mad at the Muslims instead of the owners? The Muslims are not doing anything wrong. The owners are the ones breaking your moral code on what can or what can not be built on ground zero.

Why are you guys mad at the Muslims instead of the owners?

Mistaken? It's the very nature of a democracy that majority opinion trumps minority rights. EVERY TIME.

That's why we were delivered a republic rather than a democracy in America after the revolution.

This next is not aimed specifically at you, though.

I'm getting a real kick out of the Constitutional Scholars present here, declaring that this or that is against the constitution. I've yet to see ANYONE explain precisely how this debate involves the constitution at all, either for or against the mosque. I can't for the life of me, see a constitutional issue anywhere in the debate, no matter how high I lift it or how hard I dust under it.

How is the constitution involved?

Yeah, I guess that would probably explain the emblem on the front. I was just trying to point out that wearing a crown cap doesn't denote that the wearer is a Muslim.

It isn't.

Mosque supporters have retreated to this argument, time and time again. No one who is against the mosque is making an argument on Constitutional grounds. The mosque is protected by the Constitution, that's not the issue.....It's about sensitivity, and not being divisive.

They drag the Constitution into it because they have run out of counter arguments. And many who advocate the Constitution only do so when it suits their purpose. Many are anti-American, and do not pay taxes, etc. etc.

The only fair and sensible thing to do it blow up the whole goddamn planet and then let our maker solve the problem.

Is it Allah? Is it Jesus? Is it someone else? Well, I'd say s/he could solve this problem. S/he's probably going to laugh at you though.

This isn't going to end until someone is dead. And I'm sure a lot of people on this site will smile when it happens.

The ignorant people in the mob are not acting like real Americans. This was a mob, this is what a mob acts like, not civilized humans. Ever read words like "mob psychology" and "mob behavior" and think, "well, that's just too bizzare to happen" ? Well, here you see it in the freaking flesh. This is what mob behavior is.

As the country rots everyone's neves are strung to snapping point. It's like piles of dry tinder out there in fire season just waiting for a spark. This shows you no "rationale" is needed. People are ready to snap. All it will take is some nutcase with a bullhorn to get up on a stump and start shouting whatever...a bunch of loosely-strung-togehter random slogans from any ideology or even opposite ideologies would do. Logic and reason has nothing to do with it. These people are opeating purely from their limbic systems and all higher cortical reasoning functions are scrambled by the powerful emotional surge. That's what you get when you back animals into a corner. It's only a matter of time before something TRULY horrific happens on a mob level...mass chaos, trampling, shots fired, looting...its coming, I have a sinking feeling. Pray if you are a praying person. If not prepare yourself for the worst, the ugliest side of humanity, the stuff you read about but never expected to see.

While I appreciate the point you're trying to make, Silverstein has nothing to do with the Park51/Cordoba Initiative property.

Silverstein, as I understand it, holds the lease on much of the actual WTC site, which is mostly owned by the Port Authority of NY and NJ.

But this site is not at the WTC site at all; it's two blocks away measuring by the shortest possible distance.

See this post for more information.

this is just another example of ignorance...these people that gathered there probably didn't even know the whole story about the mosque and how it wasn't even at ground zero but showed up there just to cause trouble...just because one group of muslim people decided to bomb the trade center doesn't mean all muslim people are bad...come on...we have groups of all races that do horrible things...does that mean that all of humanity is bad????...these days I'm starting to wonder what the future has in store for my daughter and it makes me sick to my stomach...those people gathered there to kick anybody's butt that looked muslim...and that is the sad part about it...some guy just walking down the street all of a sudden in fear of his life because of an angry mob out to get some....what a shame...
