I'd like to propose a system for bannings where reason for banning is posted? Sometimes it's very obvious but sometimes it's out of public view.. I'm not going to start protesting anyway! It'd just be kind of handy to know whose been banned, and why... looking around, some good posters have been banned..

Anyway, delete this thread if you want.

Hrm... might disagree with you there. Most recently: energy_wave for hoaxing the board twice (second time wasn't content related like the first, but conspired to misrepresent who was creating posts) nutzobalzo for giving several staff members a hard time, and posting hard-core porn in his sig. Anyone else you're curious about?

We shouldnt have to ask for an explanation on a case by case basis if a system was introduced that let us know who and for what.

Didn't NB also plagerize and then posted that content on two threads?

What happened to War Happy?
What happened to Colonel? (I think I know anyway, was it the 'what is everybody whining about' thread?)

I agree that there should be a place we can find out why members were banned. Kind of like the WARN buttons on members banners.

What happened to gmcnulty?

EDIT: Is it just my imagination, or are more people from 'the left' being banned than ATS's 'right wing'?

Has anyone read what the Colonel wrote in the "what is everybody whining about" thread? He basically said he was dancing and celebrating that Ronald Reagan was dead.

I believe in good taste and bad taste and definitely some do have a lot of bad taste in choices for the forums.

And sometimes we have to be mindful of the feelings of others, in special occasions.

Just because we may disagree on somethings does not mean to be also disrespectful, I agree with the people in charge of this site to control the quality of the forums and the people that support them.

Colonel: When we made it clear the mud-pit was no longer a place for free and easy personal insults, he "whent bonkers" and tossed some nasty names at a few staff members. In his case, there is an opportunity to return if he cools off and just offers an apology. He's taken these things well before, we expect he'll be back. gmcnulty Was caught up in similar mud-pit madness as we attempted to restrict personal insults, while in the heat of political debate. As many members have noticed, people who frequent the pit tend to come out in to other forums and bring echoes of their bad attitude into the cultured finery of our topical forums. This was the primary reason for enforcing decorum within the pit. nutzobalzo wasn't banned for stealing the work of someone else, however, after his ban, the original author discovered his content on ATS and came forward. This does certainly indicate a generally sub-standard ethic with this former member, which explains the actions that got him banned. OHWB's There have been a slew of one-hit-wonder-Bans (OHWB's in ATS-speak) where trolls have registered and spammed a forum with advertising or outright horrid idiocy. As we get gigantic with up to (and over) 100 new members a day, we tend to have little-to-no patience for new members who exhibit intense troll-like behaviour in their first few posts. Returning Banned Members: There have also been a slew of bans on new accounts created by banned members. nutzobalzo tried this, as did THENEO, and we have a system in place to recognize such activity. As for political leanings... I think this only means the current trouble makers in the ban list lean left... we've had a run of right-leaning bannings a few months back. In general, it balances out as both sides of the spectrum have their idiots, twits, and trolls. edit: typos [edit on 20-6-2004 by SkepticOverlord]

Thanks SO, has been informative..
But why was THENEO banned in the first place?
I think it'd be helpful for members to have a post announcing when/why someone is banned from this moment forth, just so to make sure we realize, and it may help to police state us into a scare =p only joking.
It's good to keep us informed!

Thanks

Edit: Not being very articulate at the moment..
Why someone gets banned, etc, in bannings from this moment forth, should perhaps be posted as a continuation on this thread or under a new forum called 'Bannings', so that people can understand why people are banned and what will overstep the line!
Thanks again

Schools out for summer .... nutcases overflowing the board... I am sure there is a causative link there somewhere.

Browha, if we do that then we get into endless debates over the validity of the person getting banned. Even with our "no comment" policy we still get people wanting to make issues about it.

Personally, recently I have deleted posts along the lines of "Why was *** banned" from people who have later told me that the banned member asked them to make the post. By taking their issues to the public they try and gain sympathy and get back in. All it does is perpetuate board drama.

Its not on,
Bannings are not based on personal likes or dislikes, they are collective decisions from the mods and supermods. It's not something done lightly.

By debating the issues in public we only undermine the work that goes on behind the scenes. We also provide an avenue for whiners from other places who wish to perpetuate their hatred of ATS in a public avenue.

Mod decisions should be left to the mods, only they have the background information that is used to reach a decision. Often bans come from cumulative events over time, as opposed to one off episodes.

Don't be blaming the people who are in school! I'm in school. Well I'm out for summer now but still. That's not fair to us. That's making an asumption and that's not cool.
