I recently found this article in my local news about an "Honored Iraq veteran from
Verona is found fabricating stories". This guy turns out to be someone I went to
Middle School and High School with. What is rather bizarre is that since I have known
him he was know for lying and deceiving.
Every new school year would start with some amazing tale of what he did that
summer. Some of his claims included: Working with undercover cops to bring down
dealers in Newark (at age 15), rescued a baby from drowning and performed CPR
and in 9th Grade he said he joined the Army just for the summer.
All of his wild claims he would retract later and say, he was just messing, but some
he truly held onto. It was weird, cause you never knew what would say next or what
was true or not.
He came to school once in this red jacket with black marker on the back with an
insignia of some kind and some Army jargon with numbers etc. Like a 16 year old
drew it, oh wait he did. Anyway he swore for the next few years of school that he
was in the Army during the summer and that they had made him this jacket.
What makes a person lie like this? To this extent? For over 15 years?
His also claims that he helped recover bodies at 9/11 as part of the National
Guard, which proved to be false.
In the article he has even taken part in the comments by defending himself and
partially blaming Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which some experts have said
that lying is not usually an effect of such a condition.
