When this first became a national issue I thought that the Muslims should graciously extricate themselves from this and abandon the mosque at ground zero. Then I learned the mosque isn't even at ground zero and realized this manufactured controversy is just a new variation of the same old anti-Islam song and dance. The people who are ostensibly angered by this mosque and want others to be angry aren't upset that they can build a mosque at ground zero; they're angry that they can build mosques anywhere. If the Muslims said
"Ok, forget this!" And went and built the mosque in Queens the anti mosque people wouldn't call it a victory and let the issue die...they'd just go and Fox news and ask, "but is Queens really far enough away?"

I base it in part on this quote,

But Arey said the original site is no good. And archdiocese officials disputed the Port Authority's claims, saying the church has complied with all conditions.

"It's not about money," Arey said. He expressed hope that the project can still be salvaged.

"This little church deserves to be rebuilt. It's symbolic, not just for Orthodox Christians, not just for Christians, but for all Americans," Arey said, calling the mosque debate "helpful" to the church's cause. "I believe that people around the country are asking themselves the question -- why all this talk about a mosque being built near Ground Zero? What about a little church that was destroyed on 9/11?

from this source,
www.foxnews.com...

You have to read between the lines a bit, but the church spokesman's innuendo is quite obvious.

I read the quotes in that article as just saying that St. Nick's and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese hope that the national debate over the Park51 project will draw attention to their predicament.

Which is fine, and if it does and that gets the St. Nick's project kickstarted, then at least something positive will have come out of all this.

I think you're reading into it more than the archdiocese and the church would want you to.

Port Authority wants the land the church once stood on to build a security center for JP Morgan Chase building that is going up on ground zero. And the church is holding out for money. Nothing more to this than the usual NYC politics for land grabs and land swabs. It's all about $$$, even for the church., who is simply trying to get the best deal for their land and a relocation spot as the business interests want the same land they had. False equivalence. Nothing at all like the situation with the Islamic community center.

Sadly, the Muslims are the problem. The women are happy to integrate. The young males are sometimes a different matter though.

Our problem is the Royal family and the Vatican. Everyone else is just trying to survive and prevail. We're fighting ourselves while they shrink our little cages.

Why doesn't someone just tell them the truth? That it's NOT A MEGA MOSQUE?

Because it isn't. The proposed building is a community center.

Oh and that location?

It isn't at 'ground zero' but blocks away...

BACK TO WORK BOYS AND GIRLS!

peace

I think you've missed the point my friend.

Once this mosque is built the Muslim communities all over the world will be able to go into backward countries and teach to the illiterate followers that a mosque now stands where the world trade centers used to be.

It's a small white lie, but a powerful one.

This is nothing but a propaganda ploy by sinister people with ulterior motives. Build a mosque there and they will have the dynamite to build untold explosive vests and continue their reign of hate.

I'm with the construction workers on this one. Even if it gets built by outside labor, I still wouldn't dirty my soul on it's construction.

Luckily the construction workers have more sense than the apologists for Muslim extremists on this board.

Or, they could say wow...America is really as tolerant as they claim to be and they really do stand for their values and principles.

Vivid imagination you have there.

As someone put it, for some rationalizers, this is a lose-lose situation for American and a win-win for Islam either way.

If America blocks this they can point fingers and call us hypocrites and cowards. If we don't they can thumb their noses at us...big deal. Given this lovely set of circumstances, the thing that will do the least damage at this time is to uphold our values and show tolerance.

They, this radicalized Islam you fear, will get far more American-hating mileage and propaganda out of it if we block this Islamic center being built by Americans for Americans.

perhaps some of the construction workers mentioned will do so serious and scholarly research on 911.... sometimes people can take many years to grasp the meaning and causes of such events

no doubt when they do they will also refuse to work on construction projects for the federal government , or work related to synagogues, for the sake of balance.

You make some powerful arguments.

On the other hand, if the USA Ok's the mosque, will they thumb their noses or will they just think we are all frightened?

After all, it is a widely held belief by Muslims that the West is afraid of Islam.

Hence, building the mosque will most likely be seen, in the Islamic world, as a sign of fear and capitulation by the US.
