State's Guard troops headed to border duty will have focused mission

Reporting from San Diego — The contingent of National Guard troops scheduled for deployment next month at the California- Mexico border will be smaller and more narrowly focused than past missions, aiming at front-line deterrence rather than building fences and roads, according to federal officials. The 224 California National Guard members are part of President Obama's move to bolster enforcement efforts along the entire U.S-Mexico border, first announced in May. Most of the 1,200 National Guard troops heading to the frontier, about 550, are going to Arizona, the major illegal immigration corridor into the U.S. The California contingent will be posted at strategic areas across San Diego County and will drive U.S. Border Patrol vehicles, using binoculars and night-vision goggles to spot incursions and report them to federal agents, according to Kim Holman, a National Guard spokeswoman.

so heres our first taste, im quite surprised at how the numbers are so small. i was expecting alot more to be sent.

im wondering if there will be a contingent deployed to the arizona border aswell??

the solders should have arresting powers and ability to shoot those that run to resist capture.

anyone think the personnel will be military police ?....

I don't think any military action should be made in those areas. Laws could be made that might enact a kind of martial law and lack of rights for the regular citizen... that and it will just create another "war".

Why is it that so many of the people posting support for troops in Arizona has some sort of GI Joe avatar or a high-tech soldier equivalent?

What's that about?

Anyway, this isn't doing anything. It's a hollow pawn move for political purposes. The most that can come of this is an unfortunate accident followed by an international incident.

lol, and merge it into the Gadsden purchase? I don't think that would be such a great idea. States usually go "sunny-side-up" because of a sloppy government, a government that looses focus on their own country.

Most of 1200 would mean more then 600. They say 550.

I mean what?! is basic maths too difficult for the average citizen to spot this propaganda in their text?

But think how great it would be, all those people that hate America could go to Arizona and live in a Conservative utopia! They could pass all sorts of laws like English only, the return of segregation, eliminate the right to vote for minorities and women, end all entitlement programs whatsoever, (no matter how much someone may actually need assistance), Christians only, and who knows what other Conservative ideals forced onto the people. Wouldn't it be great?

Above, four states border Mexico and only Texas has a longer border with Mexico than Arizona. If they were distributed equally, it would be 300 per state.

If 550 are going to AZ, there could be another 300 to Texas, 200 to CA and 150 to NM. 550 would be the most. I think it's safe to say that most are being sent to AZ because it's the political hot spot as far as border enforcement goes at the current time.

Not to sound pessimistic but I think it's just politicians deciding to pay attention to their constituents and polls now that midterms are creeping up on us. Regardless of whether you personally agree or disagree with the actions of Washington over the past year and a half, many of the actions they've taken have been less than popular among the majority of all Americans. Election cycles have a tendency to make congress critters pay more attention to what people think or feel and right now right now the priority is getting re-elected. JMO.

Pandering for votes, also, what are these soldiers going to do? Shoot borderhoppers? This seems like the government could start martial law very quickly.....and the scary thing is, people want the government to help.

They are hoping this will buy time with the public until they can find a way to push through an amnesty bill under the wording "Comprehensive immigration reform" ... They need to do this badly before the upcoming mid-term elections in order to gain enough potential votes to hang on to their majority.

Make no mistake, this does nothing to secure the border, but it does give the media something to report.

What we really should do is complete the wall,
set up 50 cal. fully automatic, surveillance operated shoot on site guns.
place them every 200 yards along the boarder.
this would be a very cost effective solution and cut down on the rat population.

Actually, all that needs to be done (politics aside) is for the federal government to aggressively enforce existing immigration laws.

No wall, no changes no politics necessary!

Neglecting this is why it is an issue in the first place, and throwing troops out as observers isn't anything more than a political ploy.

The federal government does not want to do anything to offend the Hispanic/Latino community.

If you fail to see this for what it is, then you've been fooled again.

Hmm, really,.. Look, for some reason you have compassion for these boarder jumpers,. there is a wealth of knowledge available as to why they need to follow the correct route to enter this country. WE have to live by rules and quite honestly ANYONE who comes into this country and tries to get stuff for free when I am busting my a$$ to make a buck and have to pay TAXES is a RAT,. It is enough that I have to pay for welfare and unemployment to the current leeches on the system..
