Given money for rehiring, schools wait and see

As schools handed out pink slips to teachers this spring, states made a beeline to Washington to plead for money for their ravaged education budgets. But now that the federal government has come through with $10 billion, some of the nation’s biggest school districts are balking at using their share of the money to hire teachers right away.

Okay, so now we have not only corporations hoarding money intended for job creation/retention, but school systems too? The purpose of stimulus money is to stimulate, not maintain status quo.

Basically what these school systems are saying is, we're going to use the money to prevent possible future layoffs and use this money to postpone addressing local budgetary/tax base erosion issues, the hell with those already laid off.

It this money was given to them to rehire/hire that's what it should be used for, damn it. These bailouts and programs are never going to work if they're not used as intended.

Kind of makes you wonder how much of this unwillingness to rehire goes to them using the "economy" as a way to clean house for other reasons too.

Actually most of the money that was given for the last stimulus is actually to benefit those teachers and workers that are on unions.

Any teachers that don't belong in any union are fair game for the school districts and they can be fired at will.

That last bailout was the biggest win for the state of California union workers.

Yes you have hit the mail on the head. Its the same thing they did with the money to revamp and modernize the steel industry. They pocket it and then say they can't compete because of the unions and people eat it up like fillet minyon.

Interesting. If a school district that got money is union, I guess union rules would apply. But the issue still seems to be, whether they are union or not, that they appear not to be using the money as it was intended at all.

Seems the federal government might need to be more strict about and enforce what the money can and can't be spent for?
