French police warn terror ricin may be in UK

LONDON (Reuters) - French police have warned their British counterparts that containers containing the deadly poison ricin may have been brought to
Britain after being manufactured by an Islamist militant, the Observer newspaper says.
French investigators have been trying to track down dozens of the small containers of ricin suspected to have been made in a makeshift laboratory in
Lyon by Menad Benchellali, who was arrested during police raids 18 months ago.
The ricin, which can kill in hours if inhaled, injected or ingested, is believed to have been stored in the form of a white powder in jars of face
cream, the Observer said.
French sources say that samples of the ricin that Benchellali allegedly produced had been found in Britain and that several jars were unaccounted for,
the paper said.
A Scotland Yard spokesman declined to comment.
French investigators said in January 2004 that Benchellali had undergone training in a guerrilla camp in Georgia's Pankisi Gorge, once used by
Chechens fighting government forces in the neighbouring breakaway Russian province of Chechnya.
Benchellali and eight others are suspected to have been preparing chemical weapons attacks on Russian targets in France, the investigators said.
