It seem TPTB never seem to tire of finding new ways to pour scorn and ridicule upon those who have awakened to their plans.

They constantly depict conspiracy theorists as crazy loners with their half baked studies that deliver no facts to debunk the conspiracy theorist. Instead of actually debating the facts, they use sarcasm to depict the conspiracy theorist as totally out of his mind.

The latest effort in this trend is to label conspiracy theories as "Pessimist Porn".

Porno for Pessimists

The very fact that you are reading this may indicate that you suffer from a psychosis characterized by delusions of grandeur, coupled with feelings of euphoric bliss, at the prospect of being clued in to terrible events and conspiracies that may be contributing to the end of civilization as we know it.

Back in early February of 2009, Hugo Lindgren—writing for the New York Times—coined the phrase “pessimism porn,” referring to a “fantasy world of the web” where dire economic predictions are cast by self-righteous doomsayers and apocalyptic futurists. According to Lindgren, those of us who give credence to such notions are merely addicted to bad news, and have a false sense of superiority over “ all these heedless knaves who have no clue what’s coming down the pike.”

They portray us as a bunch of wackos who get our rocks off believing that the world is going to end while the rest of the world sits by unaware, implying that we get an almost sexual pleasure from each new bit of bad news.

To me, it seems that conspiracy theorists, at least the ones here, don't get off on being smarter than the masses. We're pissed off as hell that those sheeple won't wake up as well and finally do something about all of the evil going on around them.

We know that we can't effect the changes that this world so desperately needs without the help of a whole lot of more people. We don't want to feel smug because we know the score and they don't; we want them to wake up as well and join in the battle.

Me, personally, I agree with the author in his final comments of this article:

The daily struggle to find the truth is not a masturbatory exercise in futility. It is an ugly, dirty and animated war for information. To be involved, you must be a warrior, not a spectator.

The definition of pessimism is:

The doctrine or belief that the evil in the world outweighs the good.

While I may believe that evil men overwhelmingly occupy seats of power, I am confident that good people outnumber them several thousand times over. But until I see these people wake from their slumber, and rise to join the fight, I will remain…a pessimist.

Its easy for them to label and make people who question just sound ridiculous for even thinking for themselves. Anytime you can put a label on something, it just takes away all credibility and individuality. Through what lengths will they go through? It is all necessary to brainwash into the heads of those that follow blindly all the news that is spoonfed, that we, are the enemy.

This may not be the norm, but a fair generalization IMO...most topics in this type of setting are indeed negative, or at least have a negative connotation attached.

Let them take their pot-shots...just a reminder of who got it right.

Oh, and...

Get Off..? A little strong, but ya', I think I am in better company on this site than out there, and I'm sure as hell not walking around with blinders.

Label away sheeple...

I don't think that we're addicted to bad news as much as we're addicted for searching for the TRUTH.

Unfortunately, in this day in age, what is true is often what many would perceive as "doom and gloom".

The truth often-times isn't pretty.

If you want pretty go look at pictures of rainbows and unicorns.

As for me, I'll take the cold, ugly truth over the bogus sunny illusions peddled by TPTB any-day.

Edit to add:
BTW, I guess I should apologise to all those folks who visited this thread expecting to see girley pics.

Sorry guys, this is one of my (rare) serious threads.

I have to say I was once very into pessimist porn. Every news article that spoke of imminent doom made me feel like I was right and it was all coming toppeling down. I would even post them on facebook and try to get everyone else on board.

Then I took a step back. What was I really doing?

SPREADING FEAR

Thats it, thats all it took. A realization that whatever I focused on I saw more of. Look at nothing but fear porn and you will start to see things that will confirm your views. Kind of like when you really want a jeep and you start seeing them everywhere, its becaused you are focused on jeeps, life works that way.

Its your choice, fear or love. Focus on love and you will see it all around you!

What if TPTB's biggest victory was putting people in a state of fear and the collective consciousness of the planet created a future of what we all focused on...

Their biggest victory is making you think they have power over you and we are all doomed.

Be grateful for the good things in our life and they will multiply, I promise you.

I see us as the same sort of people that sat in the pubs by the fire...the suckiling pig turning on the spit...drinking ale and grog....sorting through the garbage coming down from the King.

And eventually, the reality aligns with our speculation and there are those in our group that act...with hand bills...and pamphlets....and confrontations for the truth.

You know... the sort of rabble that breeds civil strife and revolution.... the sort of people that spread the news of the first shots out of Boston...Concord...Lexington.

Overlly wistful...romantic illusions of grandeur? maybe...but I've got my bagpipes playing and my face is painted blue and white.

It's just another author seeking fame and glory or attention making bold statements by putting down whole other groups of people. In this case the word porn is associated with conspiracy folks even though the two have nothing in common. The author knows this but wants to associate the negativity one word has with the group. If the author doesn't realize this fact, he is a lost cause anyway. There are a few people who enjoy putting down others and speaking negatively about entire groups of people. These people are really the negative ones.

Your thread is awkwardly misleading.

I was about to post:

Hell, Yeah !

But it would be cool to get of on bad news tho...

I would be in a never ending, bad news heat.

For the writer to make a complaint saying conspiracy theorists are mental retards. Someone should pay him a visit.

Am I addicted to "porn for pessimists"???

No. Not at all. In fact I get more of a kick from positive stories than I do from the negative ones.

Do I care to know the truth, even if it's ugly, uncomfortable, or just downright bizarre?

Of course I do. Truth is the basis for all rational reasoning and I make a point of at least trying to delude myself into thinking I am a rational person.

What I find funny is that this study doesn't want to say "Wow, this whole corruption, war, really bad governments thing is getting way, way, way out of hand." But, instead, says that the people who notice are the ones with the problem.

Hey I could be a porn addict lol, I clicked this so quickly hahaha.

But it is true partially that I do watch porn more than have sex in real life, and sometimes watch porn while having sex lol

It is cool you guys should try it, double sexual satisfaction umm.

That being said, this is just another insult thrown at us, because they well, they are attention seekers lol.

One girl in school cut her arm to get attention from a guy who she liked, I remember that day very clearly, attention seeking can turn in to a mental disorder, it has been proven. You can see how desperate people get for attention, some ever risk their lives to gain it, some literally eat #, puke and piss to seek attention.

Well there goes my warning.

You definitely give us something to think about.

I've read about the laws of attraction and it would be a masterful plan to make the people of the world think they were enslaved in order to manifest that into reality.

For me I would like to be an optimist. Perhaps by believing that enough people will soon awaken to the evil plans of TPTB, we can manifest a world in which the en-slavers are overthrown and peace and justice finally reigns in this world.

We can only hope...

I was pretty much in the same boat as you. I've tried telling friends, family, and others about the "conspiracies". Those that don't believe just label me as a wack job, and those that do find time to do their own research can't sleep at night because of the fear of what's actually going on. I wish there was some happy medium.

Just today it was really hot and muggy outside, and somebody mentioned global warming. I merely stated that the entire solar system is warming up, and that mars' ice caps were melting (which has nothing to do with conspiracies by the way). Immediately I got the response. "I don't give a #@!& about your conspiracy theories, and I said, why? And they stated "Because they annoy the heck out of me." At that poing I just shut my mouth, because getting into arguments does more harm than good, and simply told this person that it was fine that they believed what they wished, because I feel trying to force information down somebody's throat is inflicting upon their own free will.

I don't get OFF on being a truther. If anything, it kind of feels degrading in a way that nobody will ever take you seriously again, until they turn off the TV and decide to read a book.

Wanting to know if there’s more to “the glass being half full” is a natural part of human nature, and the main driver of all Conspiracies.

Of course most subjects on ATS are either negative or radical!!!
Why? Cos bad news sells, and it sells because people find interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if the human brain is acturally hard-wired to be interested in bad news (after all it would certainly make sence, since humans are social animals, who evolved to face many threats, and deal with through communication).
That would make most TV news entertainment; when was the last time you say something thatsincerely empowered you to change your life, or our world?

So what the degenerate authors, of OP’s article did was to take known information i.e. “people find negative news entertaining” and delibretely turn it into missinformation that defames conspiracists (making people appear odd, is a well known way to make Sheeple, fleet away!!)

Not to defend the other person's position or make light of it in anyway, but people tend to say the wrong things when its extremely hot, especially muggy. I recall getting into the only fight I have ever been in with my friend and it was a result of the heat. Thoughts hold weight. Sometimes they get cooked.

I know the heat did have a factor in it, since this was a co-worker, and we were working outside all day. But they know my stance on certain things, yet whenever my mouth opens they roll their eyes. I could say the sky is blue, and they would be like. Ohhh, because the evil government made it blue, right?
