Islam is not the enemy, on that I agree, what is the enemy is the constant allowance for others (muslims), while not allowing those who have freely practiced their religion in this country for many years (christians) any tolerance. We are becoming a nation that see's the rights of some over the rights of others, to be far more important, they should all be equal, not prejudiced one way or the other.... correct?

This is but an ongoing battle, in which the rights of some groups are championed, while other groups rights are vilified....

Are you claiming that Christians are somehow more persecuted than Muslims in this country? Christians have it easy compared to the other faiths in this country. Their religion dominates the landscape and the culture. Heads up there are plenty of churches near ground zero as well as everywhere else.

If you are specifically referring to Natl' day of prayer. You cant claim that the abolishment of that day is against Christians. It was never a Christian event. It was an event for ALL faiths. And it was deemed unconstitutional(equal for everyone). If you want to take the stance that ending Natl' Day of Prayer was a bad thing they you must recognize that it was bad for all religion not just Christians.

I guess it's a good thing we have freedom of religion in this country.

I feel sorry for those who don't.

I too thought they were building a Freedom tower, but we see how long that has taken, if the mosque gets approval, lets see how fast it is built....

That's what I have been thinking on this issue. President Obama can give his support. Any President throughout history has supported various issues before that were controversial. This is a job for the U.S. Supreme Court. Because only they can uphold the Constitutional law of the U.S.

One World Trade Center, also known by its nickname and former name Freedom Tower,is the main building of the new World Trade Center under construction, expected to be completed in 2013.

This is from wikipedia. I have never been to New York. So i can't tell if they have started building.

Just on a side note, away from religion, for a moment, How much of a protest would it have caused, if say Germany had wanted to build a statue, shortly after WorldWar II next to the Tower of London????

Freedom tower plan was a joke and should have been completed if they planned on doing anything. It was steeped in red tape and govt bureaucracy.

This mosque in question is about 2 blocks from ground zero and its a private construction. So I'm sure they will hire a construction company and it will be done in less than a year. They have to convert an old Burlington Coat Factory, so i'm not sure if those stores are much different from the layout of a mosque so that could be the deciding time factor.

So what is the time frame and distance on such matters? Should Germany be allowed to build a statue or German Cultural center in Europe now? If so how far away?

Same questions could be asked of this Mosque building. When will it be ok and how close is too close?

Obama and you all can think what you want, the Cordoba house and initiative has a very strange meaning to it, if they'd only change the name it might signal some better intentions...
If you dont know what the meaning is, you better look into it..

I agree with you OP. Many people just have a distaste for Islam. Because they have know clue to what the Islam is about. Many will be surprised as to how Muslims are credited with many great accomplishments throughout the years of the founding of Islam. Yes Islam has it bad fruits, just like Christianity, Even Atheism has it bad fruits.

After Islam conquered well established countries the many great accomplishments you speak, Islam has stole the knowledge from those countries after been conquered.

Many will be surprised as to how Muslims are credited with many great accomplishments throughout the years of the founding of Islam.

Islam words, Conquer by the sword, i am sure you may noticed the sword in a few Islamic countries flags.

I guess Islamic apologists here on ATS want the ottoman empire back to now huh?

Because they have know clue to what the Islam is about

Excuse me but i have to disagree with you on that statement.

Eupore and its citizens are getting tired and sick of islam.

Ok, I'll bite, just exactly how long has this mosque been in the planning stages and when did the idea come about? Is there a specific need for this center of worship in this area? If so, could the idea have been approached more diplomatically, with out all the hoopla, or was it the fault of others, that this got into the press? in other words, was this mosque plan put together to serve the needs of the immediately surrounding Islamic community, or was it simply nothing more than a provactive act, designed to inflame those who still do not forget 9/11?

Here is more information on the Mosque.

en.wikipedia.org...

In July 2009, the real estate company and developer Soho Properties purchased the building and property at 45–47 Park Place for $4.85 million in cash.

Soho Properties' Chairman & CEO is real estate developer Sharif El-Gamal. His partner is Nour Mousa, the nephew of Amr Moussa, the Secretary General of the Arab League.

I was listening to a radio program this week that stated,
The muslims historically build mosques in places were there is a victory.

And the fact that this is being funded buy the same Arabic family background as the hijackers.

No need for this mosque to be built. Not there

Something else that amazes me about this. and someone please correct me if I am wrong,.. is this is a country where women have fought to have rights.and in the muslim world, woman do not have rights,.. interesting,.that there are not more women barking about this.

Looks like you still don't know anything about Islam. I can't stand people who are arrogant like you.

listverse.com...

Historian De lacey O’Leary states “History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated.” There is no record in history that shows people being forced by sword point to convert to Islam. When Islam spread through countries they would set up private churches and synagogues for the non Muslims they were governing and because of the good treatment they had received they themselves would convert. If one considers the small number of Muslims who initially spread Islam to the west all the way from Spain and Morocco and into east from India and China one would realize that such a small group of people could not force others to be members of a religion against their will. It is also interesting to note that when the Mongols invaded and conquered large portions of the Islamic empire, instead of destroying the religion they adopted it!

In Islam women do have rights. Tell me what you think of this entire article.
There are many wonderful people in the world who are Muslims.

listverse.com...

The image of a woman wearing a veil from head to toe, a woman who gets unfair justice or a woman who is not allowed to drive is an all too familiar notion when it comes to women treatment in Islam. And while there are Muslim countries in the world that do implement many harsh rulings against women, this should not be portrayed as Islamic law. Many of these countries have cultural differences that go against the teachings of Islam. It should be noted that during pre-Islam Arabia women were used for fornication only and had no independence. The birth of a daughter in a family was considered humiliating and the practice of female infanticide was uncontrolled. When Islam came to being, verses in the Quran condemned the practice of female infanticide. Islam gave back many human rights to the woman and Muhammad(s) was even reported saying that “women are the twin halves of men.” A Muslim woman is allowed to reject and accept any suitor for marriage and has the right to seek divorce. There is nothing in Islam that forbids a Muslim woman from exiting her house and is allowed to drive. Also in regards to education, a woman is obligated to seek knowledge and it is considered a sin if she refuses.

Oh, no! Obama and I agree on something. I must surely kill myself.

Obviously I am now a muslim/anti-American/socialist, add more if any of you feel I am worthy of anymore tags.

This is horrible! The "constitutional expert professor" actually believes what I believe! And it's based upon the U.S. Constitution! Good Gawd what is happening to him? He wants to follow the ideals of the Constitution!

Oh, wait. I get it. Um, it's an issue that furthers his "agenda". Okay, now I am against the building of a "victory monument" by Muslims at Ground Zero.

Meanwhile, just cuz, I just gotta say. no government money should be involved in any of this stuff. Just saying............cuz I have been bombarded with messages from folks about government paying for all of this, in some way or another.

Your friend, kyred.

I am completely dumbfounded by the replies to this topic in support of this project. The real name of this project is (I believe) the "Cordoba Project". Now, look this up and how it relates to muslims and their ideology. And if, after you have investigated this and still support it, then you should go and live in a muslim country and be governed by sharia law. I will not accept this in my counrty. The liberals here are handing the USA over to muslims in the interest of political correctness, or worse, they support the idea of a one-world religion spoken about in the Bible as signals of the end times. OH, I can hear the anti-religionists blasting away at me already. Go ahead and take your best shots. The truth is this; if we continue to let the muslims gain a foothold in this country and elect their compatriots into political office, we're handing ourselves over to a people that will have us living without electricity and clitorically mutliating young girls. Oh, and don't forget stoning to death for a multitude of "honor killings", or cutting off noses and ears of your children because they want to escape from familial abuse. The path the world is taking is opening the door to islam being the one world religion spoken of in the Bible. Actually, I don't know why I even bother writing this. It is GOING TO HAPPEN. I am doing my best to educate my children and grandchildren on world events, and how this relates to words written over 2000 years ago. Everyone has a choice on which way they feel and what they are going to support or fight this.
Anyone and everyone who supports terrorists (and these people are terrorists by definition, simply by their actions and laws) can blame no one but themselves WHEN they start seeing this in their neighborhoods and cities. Pick a side. I know who is going to win. I pray for all of humanity.
Blast away, anti- religous ATS'ers!
