'Ground Zero Mosque' Imam Was A Bush-Era Partner For Mideast Peace

Tuesday, Reps. Peter King (R-NY) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) called Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf -- best known for his work with multicultural Cordoba Initiative to build a mosque and community center in Lower Manhattan -- a "radical" and criticized the Obama Administration for including him on a Middle East speaking tour. That tour, which includes stops in Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, is designed by the public diplomacy office to explain to Muslims abroad what it's like to be a Mus

"His work on tolerance and religious diversity is well-known and he brings a moderate perspective to foreign audiences on what it's like to be a practicing Muslim in the United States," State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley said Tuesday. He added that the department's public-diplomacy offices "have a long-term relationship with" Rauf - including during the past Bush administration, when the religious leader undertook a similar speaking tour.

All of these people who seem to be offended by this Mosque going up near Ground Zero, seem to be forgetting that here in America, everyone should be afforded the same rights and liberties. These people had nothing to do with 9/11 or at least we have no proof of it. Just because they happen to share a religion with those alleged to have committed this horrid act, doesn't mean that all Muslims should be punished or relegated to "less than human". By this logic, all Christians should be held accountable for the Christians who bomb clinics, molest children, burn women at the stake and pillage other countries. By this logic, all Jews should be held accountable for the atrocities committed by Israel.

In fact, it appears that this Imam has done more than most Americans in fighting terrorism and extremism. This Imam should have just as much of a right to build or operate near Ground Zero, just as much as any other American, if not more. Unless we have proof that this Mosque, its members or its Imam took part in 9/11, then who cares if they want to operate right next to Ground Zero? Should we close down all Christian churches that operate near a school?

The responses to this tour couldn't have been more predictable. In fact, when I posted the story, that's the commented I included. Seems to me that many of the same people criticizing this tour are the ones who just lost a good chunk of their argument against this imam's proposed Islamic center in NYC. And the games go on. Sad really.

Let's not forget the other completely ILLOGICAL complaint about this mosque:

There is already one a block away that has been there since before 9/11!
