A little background on this subject first of all:


The Frederick Valentich Incident is the most significant UFO sighting in Australia. This incident involves a young 20 year old pilot, Frederick Valentich, who filed a flight plan at Moorabin for a night flight to King Island where he was to pick up some friends and then fly back. King Island is in the Bass Strait between Australia and Tasmania. On October 21st 1978 at 1819hrs, Frederick Valentich took off in his single-engined Cessna 182 from Moorabin Airport, Melbourne, Australia. As he was flying along the Bass Strait at about 5000ft altitude he told Air Traffic Controllers in Melbourne that he could see a large aircraft below him and wanted to know if they were aware of any aircraft in the area.



Melbourne ATC said there were no known aircraft in the area and asked if he could identify it. Frederick said he couldn’t identify it but it had four bright lights. The UFO then passed over him and appeared to be playing some sort of game with him. He said that the object was a long shape, very fast with a green light and sort of metalic, and that it was not an aircraft. The object was orbiting him and then just vanished. The UFO then reappeared approaching from the south-west. Fredrick reported that his engine was rough-idling and coughing. Melbourne ATC asked what his intentions were and he replied ’ My intentions are - ah - to go to King Island - ah - Melbourne. That strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again (open microphone for two seconds). It is hovering and it’s not an aircraft.’



The last transmission from Frederick Valentich was at 1912hrs and an alert was immediately declared. When at 1933hrs it was evident that the Cessna 182 (Delta Sierra Juliet) had not arrived at King Island a full scale Search and rescue operation was launched. After five days of searching no sign of the pilot or aircraft was found despite the fact that the Cessna was equipped with a radio survival beacon. The weather at the time of this incident was clear with a trace of Stratocumulus cloud at 5000-7000ft, excellent visibility with light winds. The aircraft was fully refuelled with approximately 5hrs of flying time and was equipped with 4 life jackets. There had also been many UFO sightings from people before and after this incident. Whatever the truth may be, the fact remains that Frederick Valentich vanished in mysterious circumstances, possibly UFO related, and that the mystery lingers to this day.

This is one of the most scary and disturbing UFO incidents that I have had the pleasure to read about. Its both bizarre and it honestly raises more and more questions each time that I dig into it.

DSJ Er-unknown, due to the speed it’s travelling, is there any air force aircraft in the vicinity?

1908:18 DSJ Melbourne, it’s approaching now from due east towards me.

DSJ My level is four and a half thousand, four five zero zero.
FS Delta Sierra Juliet, and you confirm you cannot identify the aircraft?
DSJ Affirmative.

1909:27 DSJ Melbourne, Delta Sierra Juliet, it’s not an aircraft it is (open microphone for two seconds).
1909:42 FS Delta Sierra Juliet, can you describe the -er- aircraft?
DSJ Delta Sierra Juliet, as it’s flying past it’s a long shape (open microphone for three seconds) cannot identify more than it has such speed (open microphone for three seconds). It’s before me right now Melbourne.
1910 FS Delta Sierra Juliet, roger and how large would the - er - object be?
1910:19 DSJ Delta Sierra Juliet, Melbourne, it seems like it’s stationary. What I’m doing right now is orbiting and the thing is just orbiting on top of me also. It’s got a green light and sort of metallic like, it’s all shiny on the outside.

The story gets bizarre because apparently Mr Valentich shows up a few years later.


Five years after, a real bizarre development: One evening in August 1982 near the village of Iman, Primorskiy kray, Far East, Russia Lieutenant Colonel Igor Valerianovich Kazantsev, Commander of a frontier guard detachment near the hamlet of Iman, received a report of a suspicious man arrested by soldiers from his unit near the Soviet-Chinese border. One of the soldiers, Nikolay D (later to become a resident of Sevastopol, Crimea) in 2003 wrote to the Simferopol based “Secret Doctrine” Newspaper, confirming that he took over the watch on that date to watch over the Russian-Chinese border.



Approaching evening near the foot of one of the hills they saw smoke from a fire and soon detained a man about 40-years of age, dressed in a cowboy shirt, thick wide trousers, outfitted with “complete tourist gear”. The man assured the KGB sergeant that he had the necessary permission from local authorities of Primorskiy kray to do some prospecting in the area. Orders were given to detain the mysterious “geologist”. He was taken to the unit duty officer. During a search the soldiers found a very powerful searchlight and a strange dark elongated object, like a small flask with two dozen dots printed on its upper section without any visible pattern. The dots formed a strange image. Nikolay D paid special attention to the strange dot-like markings on the object.



The strange black flask or capsule attracted everyone’s attention. The man stated that he found the capsule at an altitude of 1204 (m over sea level). Inside the capsule a plate rolled like a tube was found. When the KGB officer extracted the plate, it immediately straightened up emitting a slight rustling sound. The plate had an English text, written with a substance bright orange in color. The text was later translated to Russian and following is an approximate translation: “I am Frederick Valentich, Junior, pilot. I was captured together with my plane Cessna-182 by a UFO on October 21 1978 145 miles south of Melbourne. Because of very limited time and of extreme danger to my state, here is what is most important.

Now this reads like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. So its gonna take someone with a real open mind to believe any of this - However, its interesting and I just ran across this and found it interesting and was curious if anyone here had their own take on the subject.

Really good story, thanks for sharing it. I hadn't heard of this case before but it was really an interesting read. I'm not really a skeptic, but I do like to scrutinize everything I see/hear/read to a fair degree. There's not much someone can say about this case other than it's a VERY strange circumstance. However, I think it's likely that the man was hoaxing. Without further evidence it'd be impossible to come to a final conclusion

After the transmission was lost, they set out to find his plane and found nothing. No crash site....notta.

His last words were of him describing what the UFO looked like.

Its chilling really.

If I am not mistaken the incident occured not far from Pine Gap, an Echelon signals intelligence station equipped with radar capable of seeing a grapefruit sized object 30,000 miles out into space and is able to tell which direction the object is rotating. They have had inquires about this incident and claim they have no information at all and did not pick up the incident. People familiar with Pine Gap's operations say this is almost impossible given their geospatial intelligence and situational awareness of the entire area. It is believed that they witnessed the incident through their instruments on site and refuse to release any information on the incident.

Obviously there are plenty of sites, including ATS that has good information on Pine Gap and their capabilities. I just thought I would add this to the OP's story which I heard of shortly after it happened. It is one of those incidents that I don't like. Taking people at will and not returning them is unsettleing to say the least.

To add to my previous post, this sounds a little too far fetched to be real. The thing that stands out the most to me is that they say Frederick was a UFO enthusiast before he was abducted. It's not impossible that the entire thing was a fake. He could have possibly faked his own death, then run away to Germany for whatever reason. Or perhaps that he traveled the world. It's not impossible that the guy just basically went nutso after faking his own death.

Then the part about aliens stealing the atmosphere is just too crazy to be real. It doesn't even make sense. Aliens have interstellar travel, but they have to steal oxygen? Why don't they just plant some trees? Interstellar travel but no agriculture? Doesn't add up there.

Very interesting. I knew of his story & am still convinced it is the best case, with evidence, of an abduction, but the Russian part is new to me.

I wonder if anyone has put in a FOI request on this.

Yeah, your theories there honestly make a lot of sense. As I said, the more you read about this incident the more questions that pop up. Thats usually not a good sign a lot of the time.

Pine Gap is well known for mysterious activities, however it is FAR from where this incident occurred.

Pine Gap is roughly in the middle of the country, while this happened south of Melbourne, which is in the south east of the country.

Theres no point asking anyone up that way for info on this, they could honestly deny all knowledge, its 2 states away.

Unfortunately you are mistaken as Pine Gap (just south of Alice Springs in the center of Oz) is approximately 2000 kms NORTH of the location where the "alleged" incident took place over the Tasman Sea.

Yeah. However, here it might really be a case of two different things. I did a little google searching and was unable to find any other sources that support the second source you used. Perhaps the person who wrote the second article you cited fabricated the whole story. That article was the only one that I could find which said anything about Frederick Valentich still being alive anytime past the night that his plane crashed.

So, another possibility would be that his plane did crash on that night due to unknown forces, but that the follow up article was fabricated. Seems like any stories that speak about Valentich still being alive cite that same article. Misinformation, methinks.

At anyrate, S & F, maybe others will know more.

Yes, it is one of the more unsettleing cases I can recall. The fact he was in radio contact until the 'dissapearance' makes it even more probable that Pine Gap was listening to the exchange and cranked up their instrumentation to get a 'radar picture' of what was going on at the planes location. I believe they had a very good record of the incident based on the capabilities of the installation when this occured. And for them to deny having anything or any knowledge was almost the worst thing they could have said. That made it obvious to me, in my opinion, that they did indeed have much intelligence on the incident. Back then the Austrailian Government had little knowledge of the full capabilities of Pine Gap even as today it is very compartmentalized and a few individuals at the top have the overall knowledge of it total capabilities. I had read a story about the exchange with Pine Gap personell concerning the incident a long time ago. This hapened almost 30 years ago now and my memory isn't quite what it used to be. Your post has sparked my interest again though and if I find some further information, I will come back and add it to your post. Glad I could add a little bit to your post, thanks for the acknowledgement!

I remember this event and following the search between the mainland and King Island . Also heard the recordings of this . I don't recall it being as far back as 1978 , thought it was later than that but I maybe mistaken . Nothing to do with Pine Gap , two different parts of the country ! As for the Russian addition to the story I don't believe it for a second .

Thanks tauristercus and SNAFU38 for your info. I am not familiar with Austrailia at all other than wanting to do some off roading there. I was not familiar with the layout. However, back when I read the story a long time ago there was a section on Pine Gap having an inquiry put to them on the incident. They claimed they had nothing and the investigator felt like that was not likely considering their capabilities. So, thats as much as I know about the Pine Gap component other that their advanced radar they had at the time. Thanks again for the info. I think it is an important aspect of ATS that people are all over the world and can bring forth information like yours on location and layout among other things.

Still an interesting case in my opinion because as I recall it he and his plane disappeared and were never seen again. And I had not heard of the Russian aspect to the story until now either.

It's not impossible, but it's not that simple.
For one thing, you're all forgetting the twenty or so independent testimonies, i.e. from people unrelated to each other, who reported seeing a wierd green light "following" Valentich's plane.

This is significant because apparently no media reports at the time of the accident mentioned the green light reported by V. himself. The transcript was first published much later.

Sure, he could have faked the green light too, why not?
Anything is possible.... right?

You are very wrong there, Pine Gap has no radar, and as has been stated it is several thousand km away.


I believe they had a very good record of the incident based on the capabilities of the installation when this occured.


You have no clue at all of the capabilities at Pine Gap, it cannot do what you claim
