Extralien,

Do you see the mist with your naked eyes when you photograph it? If so, then I'll agree with DrJay1975's opinion. The mist is normal due to the difference in temperature. Earlier, I thought it was not visible to our naked eyes as previously reported by other paranormal investigation teams.

I believe there are something at Hellfire Caves due to various reports from other Paranormal Investigation Teams. Some, however, can be explained rationally for example the mist phenomenon.

I think many of us have no clue as to what you should do next or what you should do with what you already have. There have been at least 4 Paranormal Investigation teams been taking photographs and studying this case since 2006 or earlier. I've read some of the reports. Same records and experiences. Sounds, shadows, orbs, sudden drop in temperature, various unexplained sightings, etc.... None have reach the conclusion.

Maybe we are still struggling to find what it is. Maybe we should try different approaches. Maybe we don't have any leading clue to begin with. But I strongly believe this case has link to the mystery of Sir Francis Dashwood's Hellfire Club. According to history, all his books and records was burned by one of his friends. But perhaps we miss something else? I don't know. Perhaps I'm wrong.

EDIT : When was the caves been last actively used?

I took the picture, along with 211 others that night - this was the only one that showed any kind of mist, which must count out temperature drops/local conditions/camera faults/light anomolies etc etc. For the past two weeks I have struggled with what this could be, & bowed to extralien's superior knowledge on the subject.

I didn't see the mist, the tunnel was in total darkness. I just happened to glance down at my camera screen which flashed as a battery discharge warning (3/4 down to 1/4 in a few seconds) & took the picture before intending to change batteries.

After seeing what it had captured I rapidly shot off a few more images in the same place, & got nothing...

ATS member JohnQ did this preliminary view of the image and is working on more view of this photo during the next week.

I am looking forward to anything else that may be revealed. It all goes towards the study of this pic and trying to debunk it.

This is a new image that has been examined by a member of www.pureparanormal.com...

It's rather impressive bit of work seeing as it now highlights the figure in, literally, a new light (it's been backlit by 200% using PhotoScape). The legs are more defined IMO.

I was there at the exact moment the picture was taken. I am a lead investigator for a paranormal group.

Read through the thread and you'll see we've already discussed cigarettes, breath etc.

Don't think I will get flamed too much... I'm fairly well known on these boards and not prone to posting outlandish stuff.. Been here 3 years.

I'd love to see some "photos" where someone has tried to recreate this photo in this topic.. It would sure help towards the full examination of this picture.

Not being funny, but clouds of what?
we were 300 feet underground..

A cloud of vapour, possibly, but how did it form? where did it come from? and why is it that we seem to be looking at a shadowy human figure shrouded by a mist/cloud?

Ah, yes I understand now..

What you are trying to express is the term matrixing or pareidolia.

Basically, your brain tries to make an image to recognise out of something that it does not.. we're programmed to see faces and figures..so we see them..

Hi All

I am a Co-founder of The Ghostfinder Paranormal Society, i would just like to thank you guys here at ATS for having a look at the photograph that was captured at the Hellfire caves and giving your opinion.

It does make me think about a few of the previous pictures that were captured at the caves by my group and were dismissed as being some kind of natural phenomena, this has made me have a look back at a couple of the pictures that we have in our archive from previous investigations.

This is one that has grabbed my attention, it was taken in the tunnel leading to the triangle which is where we have had a couple of interesting EVP's .

Judging by the motion's blur, the mist appear like someone's breath.

Hey All,

Ive looked at the photograph using different filters and will post the pics below. But before we get into this I just want to put a disclaimer on here stating im not an expert (in this field or using this technology) nor do I claim to be, I do this purely for fun and like everyone else im just looking for answers.

The software I use is Photoplus X3 and anyone can buy it and use it.

Ok, now lets have a look at this photo.

This is the original photo. All photos have been resized and / or cropped from the original image.

I used a black / white filter to give a better idea of where the mist was located.

To me it looks like the mist is rising from the centre of the corridor / tunnel.

Cropped version.

I dont think the legs are located where we think they are. If you agree that the legs are located within the bottom part of the mist (and the mist located within centre of the corridor) it dosent tie in with the main figure within the doorway. Theres a considerable distance between the location of the legs to the location of the figure in the doorway.

This pic should explain it a bit better

A cropped version.

I also erased the shadows from the picture, just to see what it would look like. Heres the full pic.

A cropped version.

Again you can see the mist is rising from the centre of the corridor / tunnel. This should rule out the long legs being present.

So is this just a mist with shadows in the doorway. Well yeah quite possibly but within this shadow Ive seen something that resembles a human figure, a pair of feet, a face or mask, and now possibly hands holding a cross. Yes this could all be matrixing but what are the chances of all these things occuring within the same single photo out of the 200 that were taken.

This image shows the face or mask area, with the indication of feet.

Again a slightly lighter image.

and here is the figure holding a cross or is it matrixing

Cropped and outlined.

Without the outline.

So thats as far as Ive got with this photo. Im still undecided to what it is. At this point I would lean towards it being real or "a photo of a ghost" if that makes people feel better. lol.

Mainly because theres to many features on the shadow for it all to be matrixing. Just my opinion thats all.

Please feel free to use the images in anyway you want. Theyre there for everyone to use.

Outstanding John...
Well done mate.. Thank you very much for doing that for us.

I like the one you done with the distance markers.

The funny thing with that one and kinda emphasises your point, is that the 'legs' appear to be out of focus, which is consistent with the ground, whereas the 'body' is in focus with the archway.

Could we actually be seeing TWO seperate mists?

The "bronzed" version does tend to show a difference between the floor and archway mist again. Very interesting stuff.

Now that we've got these various images, we've still got a couple of problems and now maybe a couple more.

Firstly, how and why did this mist form? Or is it two seperate mists?
Then, if John is seeing an image of a person holding a cross, why do I see an image of a person facing the other way?

This could be purely matrixing or simulacra or whatever you want to call it, but that still leaves us with the actual problem of the mist(s).

Thank you so much John for taking your time to do that.

The out of focus thing was me.. (sorry) I used a depth of field filter, just to emphasise my point of where the mist starts. The idea was to show distance (and quite alot of it) between the two points. The original image doesnt go out of focus / blur like that. Sorry if it caused confusion.

Not sure if its two mists or the mist just carrys on towards the doorway, if however the mist is a single mass in the centre of the corridor then we can call the shadows matrixing.

How the mist was formed I dont know, was any strong lighting used whilst you were all down there. If the walls were damp / wet then strong lights could of heated the water / walls to cause vapour / mist.

If you want anything else done / looked at just let me know.

I will have a look at the mist again to see if I can find anything or see how far back it goes.

Heres the original version with the markers.

A cropped version.

Edit to add: If the mist starts in the centre of the corridor and stays in focus within the picture we could say that the mist is only present in the centre of the corridor. (because its in focus) if the mist was present at the door / archway it wouldnt be in focus due to how far away it was from the camera. Is the brick archway actually in focus, i dont think it is (slightly off) The picture is in focus nearer the front and middle. I say the mist is located within the middle / centre of the picture only. Just a thought.

I tend to agree with you there.. the mist does seem to be completely central in the corridoor.

I'm currently in the process of gathering info of the temperature readings but I recall an average of about 10 degrees. It's not overly wet down there but it is constantly damp and you do get water droplets falling from the ceiling, but in places it does dry out rather well and you can sometimes see dust as we walk through..

In this pic, though, it is clear that this is not dust.
