Russia declares state emergency as heat-wave and fires spread

www.edie.net...

Russian prime minister, Valdimir Putin, chaired a meeting of the Government Presidium where he also proposed raising the minimum compensation paid to the victims of disasters, adding that amendments to that effect have already been drafted.

Almost 4000 people have died in the wildfires leading to today's (August 10) decision to declare a state of emergency declared in Russia's Urals city of Ozersk, one of the largest nuclear storage and fuel-reprocessing centres in the country.

Although ban on exports of grain have been enforced it does state that they have 9.5 million tonnes of grain in an intervention fund. They now plan to use this to stabilise the market and for aid.

With peat bogs drained for agriculture, peat fires can burn below ground unhindered. Heartbreaking for people that have homes burned to the ground Verkhnyaya Vereya for example lost 340 + homes.

Russia will persevere. Every time an empire has invaded Russia, it was Russians themselves that burned their cities to the ground in order to survive; nature can burn it all away and Russians will adapt.

BANANAMONTANA

Just a quick link to support your story regarding the Peat Fires... This is actually potentially a very serious issue for the West Europeans as well

yes sorry about the cabbage link, i tried to edit it earlier..

internal markets are showing high rise in grain prices..but now with release of stored grain are trying to level off rises.

but ! Worst hit has been agriculture, which has seen 10 million hectares of land destroyed.

Yes the Russian will prevail, times are tough.

Glad my son didn't go with his dad to Tver this summer for 3 weeks..the Dacha has burnt down and it's tough going.

Are they having international help?
