Only 17 billion?

The Iranian intelligence minister says the arrogant powers of the world are spending billions of dollars on fueling ethnic conflicts to destabilize Iran's border.

"In the past 25 years, more than 80 centers and institutions for soft war have been founded and around 2 billion dollars has been spent on them annually," Hojjatoleslam Heidar Moslehi said on Monday.

Many of us have suspected the Western powers involvement in the Iranian unrest, with no conclusive proof mind, so they remain just that, suspicions.

The war on Iran is already taking place that is something I no longer regard to be but a suspicion. It is covert and subtle but make no mistake it is happening. It is an excellent method of gradually wearing down and weakening your enemy, this alongside sanctions can provide a formidable force in destabilising the government of a country.

The distinction between these two methods however, is that the soft tactics offer deniability.

17 billion $

that amt could have helped Iran develop several refineries and supply oil in large amounts ,if the west was truly interested in free markets , then it would have developed the oil and gas depoists in Iran ,rather than waging war and giving them to monopolist companies like Exxonmobil, chevron etc.

If you read the book, Confessions of an Economic Hitman, by John Perkins, where he describes the tactics used by the intelligence community to overthrow foreign governments.

The first level is as you are describing, subversive activity.

Leading up to political assassinations performed by the "Jackals" and

then Political Coups...and inevitably to actual full scale military force.

Once the govt has been replaced , then enter the economic hitmen who sell huge infrastructure contracts backed by American Construction Corporations to the new government heads requiring lots of financing.

When the foreign governments can no longer pay. They are then coerced into payment using their natural resources....

Remember Enron and their massive profits ? That's what was going on there, Saddam was selling crude for pennies on the dollars to Enron enabling them to resell it on the open crude oil market for massive profits.

It's a great book. Really describes how the money is really made via the industrial miltary complex, and the World Bank.

Thanks for the replies folks. nh_ee I will definitely check out the book, my favourite part of starting threads is when people suggest new reading material.

Here is a great website with a piece on the effect of the Iraq sanctions.

I think the most horrifying part of the Iraq sanctions package was the resulting dramatic increase in infant mortality rates. If anything the Iraq sanctions are the clearest example of how the civilian population always pays the highest price. This will be no different in Iran.
