Children today watch far more television than children did in the early days of TV. In addition, they are online where advertising is prevalent as well. The influence of advertising has permeated much of what our children do and see.

This Media Family page indicates that the average American child views over 40,000 television commercials each year. This doesn't even cover some of the more subtle advertising such as the use of specific products in the shows that kids watch.

Very interesting videos showing how ads influence our children:

Dr. David Walsh gives an easy-to-understand tour of children's and teens' brain development and the impact of experience on the "wiring' of their brains.

Slick advertising campaigns are designed for the express purpose of manipulating children into buying products and training them to become mindless consumers of goods they don't really want.

With virtually no government or public outcry, the multi-billion dollar youth marketing industry has been able to use the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world.

Nancy Cordes previews her "CBS Evening News" segment on how credit card companies are targeting kids.

Children are influenced from the day they are born - it is called living in the world.

Advertising, the net, phones, what is cool and what is not - you can try to protect your children, but you cannot protect them from living in the world.

Advertising is a predatory medium. Much of it is designed to deceive people and of course children are the most vulnerable.

I hate when drug makers manipulate mock family relationships and then use "the love of your grandchildren" to maneuver elder folks into taking this or that drug.

They don't show ads for liquor anymore because it seemed to have a detrimental effect on children and the population at large.

How can this inundation of advertising for drugs be any better?
And then we tell the kids "just say no to drugs."

We wonder why kids have drug parties with bowls full of their parents pills.

Patently ridiculous, insidiously evil.

Then why do some of them end up considerate, responsible adults and others of them wind up wasting away, in and out of jail?

Influence matters.
