I have as much of a morbid curiosity as the next person--I think a morbid curiosity about death & death images is part of being human, because we're all gonna die some day.

But sites like ogrish.com, -------------------------, etc. that post "death photos" are disgusting. Because there are real families attached to those real photos of real death--and it's hurtful. There is no respect shown for the families or the victim, it's just "death porn" designed to drive internet traffic.

The case can be made that under freedom of the press, these sites have the right to show whatever they want. Fine. But if they are so keen on parading images of other people's immense suffering, why not start with pictures from their own family--if it's not a big deal, why not show Aunt Nellie's autopsy photos before showing Chris Farley's?

I feel very uneasy about sites like this, that I hold to such a high regard, hosting pictures of things like the latest beheaded hostage Johnson. I haven't revisted that link on ATS, but I see that "graphic content" has been added. So I am not sure ATS is showing the photos or simply linking them off-site. But in any event, all I can do is just say my peace and not click on that particular link.

I know that showing photos like that of poor Mr. Johnson can be listed under: "showing the true horror of war." But if that was my own father in that video, or if my brother was Nick Berg, the amount of anger I would have towards sites hosting such photos & videos would be large.

just my two cents.

I agree with you CC. I am as guilty as the next however of visiting these sites. It is indeed our morbid curiosity that pays for them.

That being said if you delve a little deeper into ------------------------- in particular, some of the articles on there are quite insightful. In particular the Inquisition and and politically oriented pages.

However the cleverness of such sites are that they show our quote unquote modern society for what we really are, sometimes that mirror is pretty difficult to look into.

I agree. We may have the right to put them on the net according to freedom of the press and free speech, but sites that do totally lack any tack or repect whatsoever. I feel its very irresponsible to post others tragedy just to get more hits on your website. Especially when dealing with infants and children, and now with our latest terrorist beheading event. We know these things happen, Im not saying we should pretend that they dont, Im just saying that its morrally irresponsible to use them to your advantage. Its almost terrorism in a way.

People can do whatever they want.

Noone says they have to be respectful...

Mig,
so if these photos were of your own family members or friends that would be ok if websites were disrespectful, right?

We need empathy not just for our own little communities but for the world. Or at least for those who aren't evil (taking terrorists who cut peoples heads off out of the equation).

When the poop hits the fan we are all meat, nothing more. I for one wouldnt mind a bit if people looked at photos of my demise to better understand something eg the disease I died of, injuries, war etc. You see these places arent just for the morbedly inclined to oogle at bodies, they are also informative.

...I could not have made my point any better than what you just said.

Without the photos of Johnson, many people would be skeptical of the beheading and would have labeled it as a psyop.

After looking at the photos, I had no doubts as to the authenticity.

So, in this particular case, they were helpful.

As far as the other photos of train wrecks and accidents and disease that they have on those sites, I find them disgusting.

I would not opt to censor them though.

It's just like anything else. You can choose to view or not to view, It's your choice. I personally have seen these sites and curiosity got the better of me. I have not returned back to the sites but while I was visiting I looked through most of the photo's. It really makes you understand how fragile we really are. It is also what we are made up of. The net is full of crap and sites like these and many others should be blocked from children who aren't of age to view them. There is software out there for this and I recommend if you have children who use the net.

What do the photos prove other than that a poor man was horribly murdered?

Psyop is used to manipulate the people psychologically through the use of images & other media.

By who? Since the message-boards nationwide are crammed with people who want to nuke the Middle East, banish Islam, prolong the war in Iraq and send more troops, and other advocation of extreme violence in retaliation, we better be damn sure who did this & who's backing them. Because escalating the war in the Middle East will most probably not efficently get rid of the terrorists, but kill scores more civilians and our troops. Plus the fact that our collective rage and calls for violence over these photos is exactly what the terrorists and their backers want, and more kidnappings & murders will surely follow.

The sad fact is, the more publicity these cases get, the more copycat cases will follow. And we (collectively) help fuel this publicity.

There is a decent death and gore discussion board, with images, videos and links *snip*

Some of the members of the ogrishforum also post there.

I am a pacifist so don't get me wrong I do not condone any violent act towards people and as mother of 2 sons I respect the man that go to war for peace and I feel with the family they leave behind

I believe that in this world not everyone's definition of terrorism is the same...for some it is the Israeli government in the way they threat and kill the Palestine, for others it are the soldiers they welcomed because they were bringing peace and who ended up killing and - or tottering themselves or their loved ones. I guess in their eyes they are revenging the dead of their loved ones, like military troops in WW2 would paint the names of their death soldiers on the bombs.

I can only hope that as a result of those images, our leaders will think twice before sending our children to war and use the power of dialogue first and to its full extend.
