OK. The Black Eyed Peas. You’ve heard of them. They’re a musical group, in case you don’t know. ‘I Gotta Feeling’. You heard the song. You probably saw the video---a number of times---it’s been saturated on TV and the internet! Tons of chick-on-chick action in that video. (Pause here as guys scramble to youtube.) But how come no guy-guy stuff going on? OK… so you say we hate all that homo stuff, right? Don’t wanna see it. Supposedly against the Bible and all, the ‘Bible-thumpers’ tell us. Don’t want any part of it. OK, fine. But what about all the girls doing it? And not just on this video. Everywhere. On TV no less!
Isn’t that homo?
The girls are lovin’ it... The guys are really lovin’ it!

But if two guys do it, suddenly it’s a homosexual act, to be shunned and condemned. Why the double standard?

What I think is, we’ve either got a society of hypocrites here, or a case of REALLY closeted men. And I mean REALLY closeted. Because, let’s face it. There are the same number of gay (or bi) men out there as there are women. About one in ten, if you’re counting. Is it that men are expected to be virile and ‘fertile’ and to show affection to another man (and I’m not even talking about overtly sexual action… I’m talking about affection like a hug) reduces their image of virility? Paging Dr. Freud.

Or do we just shun the gays because the Bible ‘tells us to’. (We Christians sure do love to hate, don’t we?... a whole other topic) I’m really not sure that the Bible is the reason.

Because if it was, we wouldn’t be tapping our foot, ogling over BEP videos like “I Gotta Feeling”.

See thats where I feel MOST of the ignorance originates from-- THE BIBLE!! Everyone is hating others from their own INTERPRETATIONS of a book that NOBODY understands at all. In addition, the book is FICTION, and a work of plagiarism ANYWAYS!!

I know quite a few bible thumpers who broke free of the brainwashing and now have NO PROBLEM with ANYBODY. Before that, they BITTERLY HATED nearly everyone different than them because of their own interpretation of that MAN-MADE FICTIONAL book!!

What an insiteful posting! Funny yet thoughtful. I think you may be onto something with the repressed nature of men in society today. Personally, I have no problem giving a guy friend a hug. But there are those who would think its an act of complete homosexuality, carefully watching and assessing that the hug isnt too close and doesnt last too long. Otherwise, they'll jump all over you with their bibles calling you queer.

To be fair, many Christians accept gays and even ordain them into their clergy. You all know that many don't as well.

Anyway, its not about straight guys being closeted, its about them not being attracted to other men. Women generally think that the female body is beautiful and guys that are straight think that the male body isn't beautiful.

I suppose you could argue hypocrisy however, "we were born that way" would probably be the response. I'm sure it could be argued that it is societal brainwashing, which it may be, but one thing that I could say for sure is that no straight guy is thinking "Those dudes are hot!...but I better not admit it."

I've actually never heard the song, or seen the video...

And although there is the double standard in most cases, I can say that lesbians aren't always tolerated.

I live in the Southern United states, and I can say from personal experience that people are pretty crazy when it comes to homosexuality.

I feel the bigotry towards gay men probably comes from the fear it generates in some men. Some men are ignorant and feel threatened by gay men or are insecure in their own sexuality.

I don't think we can entirely blame Christianity, however I do think some of it came from that.

Strange this thread popped up because I tried just a week ago to have a discussion about this with my boyfriend. His reaction didn't make much sense to me. He just said he didn't want gay guys looking at him. So I said I don't want gay girls coming on to me and he said oh but that's cool. Didn't get much more than that out of him. I don't get it either.

I think it could be argued that some straight men find other men 'hot'. Appreciating how something looks, and wanting to have sex with it are two entirely different things.

I must disagree with the title, its not just american society, but the whole world. You go to eygpt and no guy there wants to see gays, but everyone loves lesbians, you go to thailand and everyone loves lesbians, in fact they went so far that now theres a ladyboy. a ladyboy is a man who had a sex change and looks more of a women than an actual women!! its been that way since civilization ever started. girl on girl action is the only way forard!!!

American Society: Drugs, Sex and Violence

The American people expect what they experience to have to do with those three subjects. They may not always agree with those three categories, but those three categories are the roots of the America society since the dawn of TV.

I blame television.

It all comes down to where the American thinks they are anchored in their lives and their opinions.

Think about the porn industry. And Disney too.

With porn you have Americans viewing erotic, arousing naked bodies from a distance. The distance here is key. It is a sort of disassociation from reality. A fantasy. Such is the American way of life. Once they come into contact with the real world, that is when their ideas change, and often against what they deem as comfort.

Agreed. Title is too narrow. It's definitely not just the US!

Are you a straight guy? Just curious, because I haven't met any straight guys that would admit to that, and the only point of objective evidence I have is my own mind.

I'm a gay woman. But I will admit, that I find some men hot.

I think we all have to accept people as people, not the gender. If a male fancies a male and it is equally reciprocated and both are adults then i see no reason for it to be bad. I actually like two guys showing affection to one another, its nice to see males that are affectionate, kind and gentle towards each other. Same with two women, I do not see any problem with it.

Love is love if both people love another, if others do not like to see it then look away, simple. I see straight couples kissing all the time in public and if i find that offensive I look away. (Get a room) type of feeling...

I honestly believe if anyone has a problem with man on man or girl on girl or girl on man, then that problem lies within that person alone. Their issues to deal with and get over!

Love Love Love.

It is the Act itself that Society cannot get out of their heads.

Seriously, gay people do not go around imaging what you are doing in the privacy of your homes; they don't because they know what you are doing. They don't sit there and visualize the act until it drips out at them.

I have run across this before, most of the homophobe lesbian admirers are nothing more than pigs for allowing their imaginations to run so rampant. Geez, makes you wonder how many times these guys are imagining a woman or girl without clothing; they are pervs and nothing more!

Maybe, but a guy's mindset is different. Even gay guys that I know admit that. As a matter of fact my wife asked one of her more promiscuous gay friends why him and some of their shared gay friends seem to constantly go out to get laid "We are guys, we always think about sex."

edit: My spelling is bad today.

I have no problem with gay marriage, as long as it's between two lesbians, and they are both hot!!

I was simply trying to make the point that finding a man attractive doesn't make a man gay or a woman straight.

Society makes men feel guilty about that.

Otherwise, their sexual mindset have nothing to do with the point I was making.

I understand that it doesn't make a guy gay, but straight guys just don't see other guys like that. You'll rarely ever hear a guy call another one handsome. It isn't because they are afraid that they are infected with "the gay", its just something that he doesn't think about.

Also, my point about guy's sexual mindset was just for an example that a guy's mindset isn't like a woman's mindset. Its comparing apples to oranges.

So, I get the idea the problem for guys is they are afraid of getting an erection looking at or being around other guys but it is ok if they get an erection looking at girls even if it is two girls. The answer has to be found in science somewhere. A virus, drugs or something that could be put in mass vaccinations, beer, slim jims and stuff like that to cause erections around other guys. There should be a grant somewhere for a researcher. Once this was distributed they wouldn't have to be afraid anymore.
